German nouns aren't written with capital letters now, are they? You mean the first letter, language guru that you are.

German's also moved on since 1945.

But why is it that German uses a capital letter at the start of every noun?

Ich trinke Bier. (I drink beer).

There is no word "bier" in German. Use lowercase by mistake, and not one person will misunderstand. To say that German is a sensible language, which is a daft statement anyway when no language is non-sensible, shows some sort of bizarre political correctness. Only real Germans or robots accept their language without question.

How would you say in German? ¨Scotty drank a lot of beer and his brain has been affected¨

I'll save him the trouble and translate his answer too.

er trinkt keinen alkohol.

Each to their own, but how odd Germany is beyond reproach when "ukania" gets a bad word at every opportunity. If Germany is so gut....

And it's not going to be the usual taxi to airport dig. The German state pension is three times better than the UK. If you're going to put Germany on this altar of high praise on some teachers' website, maybe you should've paid into the German pension like any resident there can.

I "put the plug in the jug" on Easter Sunday 1990. Despite Hod I still thing that things are done better in Deutschland - especially in what used tg be the Prussian bits. I am no fan of Bavaria or the South.

Good comment. I look forward to hearing a reply from the Wise Old Fifer. Wink

Sorry to have to say this, but it's bordering on pathetic that you bang on about Germany whilst living in the UK. You aren't going to move to Germany. You could do, but you won't. Be happy with what you've got or just lump it.

I long ago accepted that Fate has washed me up on the shores of a desolate Scottish island. How did we get here from apostrophe abuse ? This is a very surreal thread.

It was EXACTLY the kind of wisdom I expected from you. Laughing Perhaps HOD could translate your greeting into Gernan. (if he understands Glaswegian, that is).

Let's get back to Apostrophe Abuse and Spelling Reform. Should we abandon hope of rationalising the spelling of the language that has become Standard Interterran ?

That was unusually witty for Hod.

Should the apostrophe be abandoned... or should we abandon the apostrophe?

Our colonial cousins have to some extent rationalised (or rationalized, if you prefer) the spelling of words such as colour and defence, so why not simplify the language further by jettisoning the apostrophe?
