It doesn't matter if your employer holds your passport in Saudi Arabia. You have to have an exit visa provided by your employer before leaving the country anyway, so they may as well just keep your passport unless you plan on escaping by camel to Egypt. There are no midnight runs in Saudi Arabia.

Unless you get a multiple re-entry visa. In which case, so long as you pay your 500 SAR (with permission of your generous benefactor, of course), you can pretty much leave whenever.

Correct. My employer issued us multiple exit/re-entry visas which we paid for. My passport was kept by them but was available on request. If I decided on Wednesday morning to fly out of KSA that night I could do it.

Great. We have one case of a consulate calling the employer to demand the passport back.

VS, why post if it isnt of value?

I did the same thing. Brit Embassy got me my passport back within 24 hours. Never had any hassle since.

First timers. This is not the norm

especially in the Eastern province. Many contributors to these forums teach at aramco. They are privileged. In most cases, you have to "request" / "apply for" a multiple exit reentry visa. Employers are not obliged to issue them. Make sure it's in your contract. Even then, multiples can take a long time to get (some employers will make sure of that), even if you're paying for it yourself.

It is now possible to do the visas online, but you can't do your own visa. Your company will have to do that.

It is a big improvement though, and the Absher system is quite good for this. I have the app on my phone, so I can do all my family's visas very easily. Takes two minutes. Keep a PDF file on my phone, print them off if you need a hard copy.

Going to Bahrain they won't even look at a piece of paper any more, but for flights you'll need it.
