The problem, of course, is how many such accredited primary/secondary schools are there in KSA? Aramco Schools is one.....but I don't know if there are any others.

There are at least 20 accredited international primary/secondary schools in the Magic Kingdom. The accreditation ranges from the USA, the UK, France, Germany, and Australia.

Accredited by whom ? Accreditation by the Egyptian Ministry of Education may not mean much when you want your kid to go to Yale !

Some of the schools in KSA are of a very high standard. Others less so. Only the desperate will send their children to Manarat. Incraesingly EFL teachers are uinable to finance a decent education for their dependant children in-kingdom.

I think anyone from any school can get into any university they want. It all depends on your exam results and ability to impress university professors at interview. You don't HAVE to have been to a British intl or American intl school to get in. You just need to have to be good whether that be from Eton Riyadh british school or a local comp in the North of England.

I suspect your qualifications aren't what the better international schools require. In other words, a TEFLA (AKA old CELTA), lack of a bona fide, related BA, and zero UK k-12 ESOL teaching experience don't make the cut. Otherwise, you wouldn't be dealing with contracting companies and seeking work that entails a business visit visa. Confused

I thought one required a PGCE (if from the UK), or at least a masters degree, to get the international school jobs abroad. I am pretty certain they do not hire B.A. holders?

In the Magic Kingdom, on top of your ordinary qualifications, you need another important/useful qualification called WASTA to get a position in one of those international schools. Smile

I had just a bachelors and my PGCE in an unrelated subject and UK experience in my subject and which only got me positions in my subject, so I decided to get a masters in English Studies from Cambridge University and put down EAL experience on my CV from a british international school and it is working wonders for EAL positions. Razz Razz

No you don't. The cra-ppier international schools in Qatar take on a bunch of NQTs from the UK every friggin year and some of the, get head of department positions so I have heard.

Incorrect. You just need a BA and a PGCE. EAL is a funny subject though to get into and it helps if you have a TEFLA, which I do have (even though I did it in 1995)

I stated a PGCE, but left out a B.A., either way you need a B.A. to do a PGCE so I would have thought that was a given. Yes, a PGCE is needed to get a position at an international school, on that we both agree, not that I see things as a competition.

That's interesting because the Cambridge English Studies' MPhil is literature focused and not geared to English language learning. Maybe you'd have better luck teaching literature in the UK as opposed to spinning your wheels trying to get a TEFL contract in the better international schools in the Gulf since English lit degrees are a dime-a-dozen in the Mid East, especially with MENA nationals.

Why do you feel English as an Additional Language (EAL) is a "funny" subject to get into?

They have NO idea it's literature based as it is an MPhil in English STUDIES not Literature and seeing as it's Cambridge too, I get offers of interviews. It's not ANY dam uni is it? Go figure why I got an interview on Thursday at an International School.

EAL is funny to get into because there is no PGCE as such in EAL. You have to get into it somehow while working as a teacher.
