At my first school back in 2004/5 I was off sick twice. Once with flu and once with food poisoning. The school paid me for all the days which was about 2weeks in total.

The second time I was in hospital for three days/nights and they paid the fees and my salary. They also had a teacher sit with me most of the day and night. After three days I got bored and checked out despite the doctors saying I should stay longer. Went back to work the next day and did not have to make up any classes.

Since then I have not had a day off sick so don't know the rules where I am now and I have been here almost 10 years. |

Wow, you haven't been sick in the past 10 years in China!

I just have one question...did you change into a robot a decade ago? |

				| I taught in Korean schools for 15 years & never once took a day off sick. I'd rather teach (it's therapeutic) than lie on my couch going woe is me. |

You are a better man that I if that's true. And I say that as a tutor who loses out on income if I don't work. Suffering from a cold / headache / flu is one thing, having fluids projecting out of every orifice due to acute gastroenteritis is another! |

Well, teaching while ill you cannot give your students the quality they deserve and you risk spreading whatever you have around, kind of irresponsible.

I tell my students the same, if you are ill do not come to class. You cannot really learn and you risk spreading whatever you have around. |

Wow! What a superman......and a judgmental one at that, to consider being ill as wallowing in self pity. Put quite simply, no matter if you are dealing with 'the kimmies' who run the private Hagwons, or a government institute in China-any employer who withholds pay from a 'genuinely' sick employee, or insists that those missed classes [never heard of substitutes?] be 'made up' later...isn't worth working for in the first place.... |
