| This is why I say 26000 is not much here. |
Just south of $4,000 per month in rural, landlocked USA isn't much?
Come to China, drop expenses, and focus on pocketing a higher percentage of takehome. I find that that can be easier to do here in China than in the US. Pay off those student loans pronto and never look back. Time to cash in and get away from that ratrace of having to pay for too much stuff.

| Sounds like a good deal to me. Salary is v good, although it is effectively 21600/month, as it is a ten month deal. I'd be surprised if you spend more than 5000 a month in a place like that, between the two of you, given your lifestyles. |
Are you subtracting taxes? I've no idea what the taxes would be. I should ask, and soon. |
No, my friend. A ten month contract basically means no holiday pay at the end. If you re-sign, you get nothing for the two months at the end of the contract. So effectively 26000/12. I get paid for 12 months, get 20 weeks holiday all paid. Monthly salary is a few thou higher than yours. But given I get paid for the breaks, it equates to a lot more in the end. |

'Would you go for it?'
My take: 'Would you fall for it?' |

It depends, this is the 'first year' contract, a lot of places are willing to give summer pay if you stay. So just because it's not in this contract, doesn't mean it won't be in the next one. |

| Easy to get to Hong Kong, 4 hours by bus only 220 rmb return |
It's important to consider the realistic total travel time. 4 hours might be the travel time on the bus (without bad traffic, and there's nearly always bad traffic) but that would only get you to the border crossing. And that doesn't include the time required to get from your residence to the bus depot, waiting for the bus (you can't just show up 1 minute before the bus leaves), then crossing the border into HK (can easily take an hour), travelling on the MTR to actually get into town (another 45 mins minimum) etc etc. I'd be impressed if you could do it in less than 5 hours from your door into HK city centre. More likely you'd be looking at the 5-6 hour timeframe I posted before or perhaps a bit more. |
For me it is 4 1/2 hours. I am over the border then. that includes 15 minutes to travel to the bus stop to get the H.K bus. leave at 2 20pm and in Mongkok for 6. 40.
Would still like to know which school pays 26k a month;
I spend 800 to 1000 rmb a month and I do have a beer and smoke cigars but I am also vegetarian so it it easier and cheaper to buy food and cook. |

Travelling time aside, I think there a few issues here which haven't been discussed yet.
1. The OP's SO. Are they onboard with this plan? Do they realise what's really involved and what the environment will be like? Will they work or will they be at a loose end? An unhappy SO can quickly unravel this whole plan. I've seen relationships and even marriages dissolve when an unwilling spouse was dragged halfway around the world following their partner's work.
2. Food safety. If the OP is really strict about their food requirements I'd have serious reservations about heading to China. Even when buying from 'reputable' sources you can never be 100% sure about the authenticity / safety of the food items in question. Yes you can argue that this is true in many places around the world but this is especially serious in China. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Food_safety_in_China
3. Career implications. Thinking ahead, if the OP does take this job, what will the implications be for their career / CV? Does it fit into their overall plan? Does it open up new opportunities? Or is it a step backwards? |
