| Fingerprints were not necessary for my criminal background check. I simply requested a name-based criminal background check from my state (Montana) department of justice. It worked just fine. It was twelve dollars, I think. |
We need to know more about your situation. Were you in Montana at the time or were you in China? Were you in a third country?
How did you request it? Michigan has something called an ICHAT system which only allows people to do a name check. Michigan government in Lansing is emailing me telling me they will NOT notarize an ICHAT search. They said the only way is to get fingerprints. I guess our Detroit gangsters outdo your Montana cabin Ted Kaczynskis. |
Did it while I was in my home state. I got the name-based background check from the State department of justice by mailing a request and payment, I then had to return the name-based criminal background check to a different state agency, the secretary of state, for the notarization and an additional ten dollar fee. This two-step process took about two weeks. |

Oh you did it while in home state. Good for you! We can all do it in our home states. Not while living in the mountains of Peru and suddenly, there is an offer from China.
This is a thread about being out of the US and having to get it. This is where difficulties begin. Should you fly back home?
Not necessarily. In many cases, you need to have someone with a power of attorney back home. POA's usually have to be notarized and you may download one and go to the US Embassy to have it notarized. That is if you had not given one to anyone before.
In my case, I did think ahead and left a POA with my accountant. He just asked me for the passport scan and my DL from my home state scan. He went to the police department, and got it in one day.
He sent me a scan of it, but I feel I may need to have a notarized and/or apostilled original. But he will most probably be able to just do the same. |

Up to you. I was merely answering the question asked in the post above mine. |

Hey guys, I'm in the same boat, trying to get my background check done from abroad. I thought I was saving money by having a friend do it back home on my behalf, but it's proving to cost almost the same as if I buy a round-trip ticket and do it myself, while having a vacation. The process if I were back home would be pretty minimal, less than a $100, but these express fees are definitely killing me. All I can say, definitely go through an agency. Initially, they seem to have steep prices, but they will guarantee a completed authenticated background check and delivered to you to China.
I just hope my agency here in China doesn't cancel the job offer as it's pretty decent. I just keep telling them the process is taking longer than expected, while at the same time, paying through the nose to start the process over from scratch. I'll keep you posted of my updates. |

How are you doing it? You shouldn't need to pay for any express fees. In my case, I pay 800 RMB and send the fingerprints to the USA. My family will send a 30 USD check to the police for the notarized background check with my fingerprints and letter explaining why I need it. Then, when it comes back, they will take it to the Secretary of State to certify the notary for $1. After that, it gets sent to a courier service (about $20), and for $99 they will do the service, the consulate charges $25 for the authentication, and then it is $75 to send it to China. In total, about $500. |
