Hi Cheryl,
I wouldn't be too concerned, I am also in Ottawa, apparently the embassy is still getting waves of selection confirmations, and they can't send out your letter until it arrives from Japan. Should be here soon though. I would call Christa at the embassy (senior JET coordinator)..she is very helpful.
Also, for the others, Nena you mentioned that you don't know your placement until you get to Tokyo? THat is not true. Short list candidates find out their placements by May. Alternates on the other hand may find out as late as the end of August. I suggest you read my (second) post reply to "Jet Alternates"...hope its helpful. |

Your welcome Cheryl...good luck!
TB:
If you get placed closer to the end of Aug, then yes your contract period will be accordingly shorter. |

Hey, the envelopes came this morning, and my boyfriend and i both got places!! So let's hope they manage to place us nearby each other, if not we'll be freeing up our places for a couple of alternates. Another few weeks of waiting... |

Hi!
I STILL haven't heard from JET and I'm climbing the walls! Do they bother telling you if you've been rejected?
If you just get placed as an alternate, and you reject it (because of not being able to stand waiting another minute longer!) does that automatically stop you from being able to apply the following year? I know you're not supposed to be able to re-apply if you reject a place once you've actually been accepted, but I'm not too sure about what happens if an alternate turns down his/her offer. I know I should probably just ring JET up and ask but I'm terrified they'll just tell me outright that I've been rejected, and I'm still hoping desperately that I might have been accepted, and I'm going to hang onto that hope for as long as possible!
Yrs

Mariana,
rejecting the offer before you've been placed does not prohibit you from applying next year. Only if you reject after accepting and being placed.
Sorry you haven't heard, they should send you a letter either way...good luck! |

My boyfriend and I have been accepted. We received our letters on the same day. Hopefully we will be placed together or at least close to one another. If we aren't in the same town or city but we are close to one another we may live in a town inbetween us and commute to work (if that is possible). If we aren't, we will have to think long and hard about what we should do. |

Biker, well done on both of you getting in. Obviously we're really happy to have got accepted (we can't believe we both got accepted, in the interview, when asked what we'd do if one of us got accepted and the other one didn't, we messed up - my boyfriend said he wouldn't go if we both didn't get accepted, while i said we would still go! good planning there!)
But now i'm really wondering what our chances are of being placed nearby. Just seen a post on the BigDaikon forum by a girl who's out in Japan now - her boyfriend got placed somewhere 7 hours away!!
It's annoying that the only way to be guaranteed to be placed together is to be married! I guess if we do get placed miles apart, one of us could accept, and the other reject and try and find a job nearby...Or we can go teach english somewhere else...
Mariana, have you heard yet? good luck |

I'm in Atlanta and my letter came Tuesday. I'm in, too!
Mariana, in reference to your question, I turned down alternate status a few years ago. Basically I didn't want to wait any longer and had another job offer. As long as you don't accept and then turn down a placement at a later date, you can reapply the following year.
Good luck. |

Still no news! At this rate I'm going to have no fingernails left! I think if there's nothing in the post tomorrow, I'm going to crumble and ring JET after all. Then again, I might just accept the job in Germany and reapply to JET next year, regardless. At least I'll be better prepared for the agonising wait!
Thank you to those people who wished me good luck! It means a lot to me.

Mariana,
i'm still waiting for my letter too so i know how much your nails are taking the beating for your situation. However, i got good advice today instructing me to re-call the embassy i was interviewed at....i think you should do the same. Ask your embassy why you're still waiting. i found out that my embassy forgot to put my apartment number on my letter therefore it was sent back to them. Now i'm waiting for them to resend the letter again. Nice huh! I'm the last person in ottawa to know whether i'm rejected or not. humph.
good luck,
