MTurton,

Not knocking, just want a bit more explanation.

From my understanding and from what I've heard about the book Heijin. Hsinchu ranks as in the top 3 of gangsterlands in Taiwan. As much as it pains me to say Aristotle may be right, and I'm not saying that!! He might have a point.

Big deal. How safe is it for foreigners? As safe as any other place in Taiwan (or as not safe). There are thousands of foreigners now working in Hsinchu, from lowly bushiban workers to the dean of a local university to high ranking executives in businesses. Nothing has appeared anywhere, except in the fervent imagination of our tortured friend Aristotle, to indicate that Hsinchu is somehow especially unsafe for foreigners.

As I said, my sis-in-law lives there and I go there all the time. Hsinchu is full of highly westernized locals who speak excellent English. It can be a great place to work and live. In fact, we may move up there next year if certain opportunities materialize. It may or may not be a stronghold of gangs, but if it is, they certainly aren't going to bother a piddling little foreigner, unless you do something dumb like start a fight with them in a bar or hassle a gangster on the street.

Aristotle has some desperate need to gain attention, or perhaps he takes money from the Chinese to hack on Taiwan, or something. I don't know why does what he does. I do know, though, that the man is as full of it as your colon.

Check out Ilan and Loudong and go door knocking. If you want nightlife and shopping then Hsinchu is probably the place to go but if you somewhat more outdoorsy Ilan is the county to be in. More people doing day trips to Ilan. Why? The city is pretty much the same as any other city in Taiwan. The surrounding landscape is nice and was my reason for moving here.

Sorry I don't know what schools to recommend but there are a few with high teacher turnover but now is when a lot of people come to the end of their contracts.
