I don't especially agree that KSA is without things to do (see my recent postings re Tourism in KSA) but I would also take seriously what other posters have been saying about a woman's situation here. It is far from easy for western women...even many muslim and Asian women...and I repeat earlier posters, you do NOT go there for the experience.

Most go there for the money, and I could easily see some people (again, ref my postings on tourism) going there to witness the unique landscape and culture, and of course the myriad historical and natural attractions. However, witnessing a culture as a tourist is NOT the same as living it as a resident, and as has been said, most westerners don't ever get the chance to really get involved in Saudi culture. While I lived there I made a number of Saudi friends and got invited to their homes, but generally, it is indeed difficult, simply because they lead very private family-oriented lives. For an female expat it would be even more difficult.

I realise that this is actually an old thread revived, but for what it's worth, I disagree with the idea that ANY experience is good. Some things that happened to me in my life, well, I could certainly have done without Crying or Very sad

There is plenty of material for a novel, but most of it is to be found among the "westpat" community! Wink

For a moment when I opened this thread I thought that JohnSlat was back - then I noted that it was 3 years old...

No, not writing a novel, but running two businesses in Romania. Maybe some day I will write the Bebsi memoirs. Perhaps then they'll even make a movie...Memoirs of a Geezer!!

"It all started when I was nine years old, and my mother took me away from the beach at teatime. It was at that moment that I realised how much I loved the sand, and wanted nothing more than to be in it".

I've since realised that I'd prefer to be the Chairman!!!! Laughing
