| I certainly can't speak as to the "best," but I'm looking into the SIT MAT TESOL in Brattleboro, VT. As I understand, their SIT TESOL cert is 36 years old, which is one of the oldest one around. They have a summer program which is two 8 week summers with teaching full time between and a culminating project that sounds interesting and possible. |

I rarely ever post on here but I thought I would chirp in on this one. I am finishing my MA in TESOL with a dual k-12 teaching certification at Salisbury University in Salisbury, MD. I have to say that after my experience as an undergrad it doesnt matter one bit where you went to school... in the real world it comes down to who you know or what skills and experience you have. Good luck finding entry level jobs with no experience... I say choose a program that has a knowledgable and wellrounded teaching staff, has hands on learning and isn't outrageously priced. Maybe you are lucky to have mommy and daddy paying for school but if you are like me you had to scrape every penny and had to look hard for a school that offered well paying Graduate Assistantships or similar programs. The program I am in is great and has taught me more than I had expected. I was very nervous going into my program because I had a BS in Journalism and Political Science with a minor in English. Just realize that a MA in TESOL may sound nice and all but you really have to love working with people, and you have to have patience also.
Ohh... dont forget your GRE and Praxis tests that many grad programs require. A 3.0 GPA isn't terrible so don't worry! Just show your strengths and your desire to pursue the program and you will be just fine.

Just a question - are there any distance MA TESOL's available?? I want to do an MA, but I don't want to drop teaching this soon into my career. I would also like to stay in Egypt for the time-being, so I have been looking into available courses in Cairo.
Any ideas of alternatives?? I have a TEFL cert. and a BA in Music and French, and I would prefer not to do a research MA. Is there anything available?? (long shot, I know...)
Thanks!! |

Yes there are many distance MAs mostly in the UK and Australia. Some of these are by coursework only so you do not have to do a thesis.
I am currently doing a Masters in Applied Linguistics at USQ in Australia by distance. They also have a degree in TESOL too. I'd recommend USQ. |

I have put together a list of accreditted distance MAs and phDs through Australian, US and UK universities. Australian ones you seem to get the most value for money and they are all very professionally run. Scroll to the bottom of the page for links.

What about M.Ed. TESOL degrees? I was always under that assumption that one of these would get your just as far as an M.A. TESOL. From what I can tell M.Ed.s and generally more practical, and less research oriented than M.A.s.
The University of Toronto has an M.Ed. in Second Language Education (SLE). I was thinking about doing this. I know that it would be useful here in Canada. I'm just worried that it won't be as useful in other countries. |
