Anyways, I have a question about JET.. I'm 26 and I graduated from college back in 2001. According to Monster.com I am classified as "Mid-Career" (versus entry level). So, I'm wondering if this is a disadvantage when applying for JET, like do they specifically seek out entry level college grads, or is it not necessarily a bad thing or even potentially a good thing that I've got real world work experience?

just so you know, JET accepts applicants up to the age of 40 and even married couples. Each application seems to be judged on a case-by case basis with different criteria used in each recruiting area. You are by far not the first 'veteran' to be selected for JET and 26 is still considered young in Japan. |

Thanks, I was just curious because most of the online activity and testimonials I've been seeing online were mostly from fresh out of college student types. Even though a program may accept and even place older applicants, I wasn't sure if anyone had experience or knowledge of an overall preference.
I guess I'm a little nervous/anxious... haha... Anyway, thanks for all the useful stuff online!! |

evilbot.
Don't be nervous. If the worst comes to the worst Paulh and Glenski will come over the hill and the rest of us will burn the building down while trying to find the back entrance.

It all depends on how you phrase on the application and who you strike during interview. As far as the numbers go, CLAIR (the recruiting body for JET, basically) has been moving towards employing people with teaching experience and more life experience. There's also been a big increase in the numbers of couples being taken over the last five years; couples tend to be more stable and stay longer, which is what CLAIR wants.
Being fresh-faced and straight out of college is no longer the ideal. Stability, maturity and the ability to fit in and be productive are going to be the points you want to hit in application and interview. They *don't* care much about what *you* can get from JET. They want to know what you can offer *them*.
Good luck. :) |

This has got to be the funniest thing I've ever read!
Is EPIC even still around?
Anyways to the OP apply to JET before the deadline and sometime next Spring you'll get an answer. A totally worthwhile experience! |
