This summer:

56 hours a week, no prep time

Not-summer:

16 hours a week (Saturdays and Sundays only, but a weekday every now and then).

This semester: 14 x 45 mins teaching 'hours' with about 6 hours a week prep. I hope...still to meet the students. Depends on their level.
Last semester 23 x 45 mins and way too much prep.

I envy those of you with 45 or 50-minute classes. My shortest class is 90 minutes long. I teach 20 hours a week and prep for about the same amount of time. So I work a minimum of 40 hours a week.

I was just wondering what the norm is. Seems that a lot of people are working 30-40 hours a week, including prep time and office hours.

I teach six 45-50 minute classes a day. Plus I do translation proofreading and other odd jobs (i.e. recordings for commercials).

You shouldn't. It's a royal pain trying to accomplish anything.

Five minutes of settling down and taking attendance and collecting/returning homework.

5-10 minutes of instructions

half an hour left to actually DO the lesson. Hardly sufficient.

I have to disagree. At my previous school I taught both 80 and 120 minute lessons two or three times a week. Trying to get teens to maintain their attention span for two hours is _tough_!

Now I teach 50 minutes every day. A few minutes at the beginning to review the previous day's material while it is still fresh in their memories, 10 minutes to present, and the remainder for practice and production. I find that 50 minutes works perfectly for my classes.

I've got you beat. I taught a four-hour class last semester. From 8 a.m. until noon...reading and writing. I don't know who had it worse - the students or I! Rolling Eyes

How about five hours a day, five days a week with the same students for about four months. It was alright, surprisingly. It helps tremendously to be able to be a bit of an actor (even if you aren't).

No, you don't... Wink At that school, for eight weeks I taught a 4-hour class of "open conversation" on Saturday mornings from 9 AM until 1:30 (there was a half-hour break at 11 AM).

Uggh. Talk about torture! Mad

Most language schools here in Mexico offer Saturday courses as a study option. In Harmon Hall they run from 8 to 1, with a 30 minute break at 10:30--that's 4 and a half hours of teaching time, but as the classes are the regular program, it amounts to 3 days of 90 minute classes in one.

I had one group for a year--a mix of folks working on their masters and doctorates in sciences and a few teenagers--as they would not accept another teacher. I enjoyed the classes with them immensely, but then I had another 4 or 5 hours of administrative work to do every Saturday because I was also the director of the institute--and THAT yes, was a drag.
