A great list, but I think your last book was the best one--I strongly recommend it to anyone (male or female/Japanese or non) considering an international marriage. My copy is in my office; however, if I remember correctly, she found three common qualities in the successful couples: shared language ability (i.e., both spouses could speak the other's language fluently), realistic expectations beforehand, and stable employment. Indeed, the latter is why I think many foreigners (especially the men--who are still expected to be the main providers) living in Japan suffer--it's a bit difficult to maintain stable employment in the "land of falling EFL salaries and short-term contracts." One of the reasons I took my current job in the States was because of the marital stress caused by trying to ensure my continued employment in Japan--ten years in Japan, including six years teaching at a national university, had left me emotionally exhausted and just a bit of a workaholic. Not a good combination for marital bliss, let me tell you..... |
