So far the only thing that's happening is MLI teachers are now drowning in paper. It's not clear where the paper war has originated - CERT or the big cheese himself (and I don't mean GF) - and more importantly why they're now subject to it.... |

I've heard it's all go now! Committees, projects, meetings, unsheduled observations of teachers.
Maybe there should be a committee to evaluate the performance of the coordinators over the past 12 months. |

I think that your ratings are a little high in some instances. |

Omar:
Me thinks your grading system is beset by the dread "grade inflation" since you cannot possibly talk about MLI management without adding the mis prefix. I would shave 5 points from each and even that's being generous. Of course that would lower the execrable R into the sub-human end of the management gene pool, but hey, if the DNA fits ...
Talk about a bunch of wankers. Never did a more inept assemblage of failed eflers rise to such managerial heights. Coordinators? We must add the un prefix when speaking of these simians in suits, don't ya think? |

HCT have appointed Mr Barry Keywood as MLI Project manager. He's got a good sense of humour - and he'll need that. He is rooted in EFL - which is more than can be said about other management in MLI.
He's from Abu Dhabi Men's College - but don't tell BD that as he's convinced HCT have nothing to do with MLI.
By the way BD - how is the apartment hunting going? |

This is all quite fascinating. I just can't wait to see how HCT and MLI manage to merge their two very different styles - and are they not actually under two different Ministries? Perhaps MLI has been moved over to the Ministry of Higher Education and that is why the Distance Master's problem seems to have gone away??
But, nrandserial, I fear you misunderstood Mr BD. He has never claimed that HCT had 'nothing to do with MLI.' He was being critical of some overstatement of what had happened in the first meeting - with which even Mr GF agreed.
I am watching this space with great interest. This has all the makings of a grand EFL reality series. I don't know any of the management people critiqued above, but we could call it 'Management Survivor - Abu Dhabi MLI.'

You fail your reading test again, my friend, but you still excel at creative writing.

Hello all
It seems to me that there's a troubling assumption in parts of this thread; that the HCT is a top tier institution; that the MLI is akin to a cowboy outfit; and the two are on a trajectory towards further confusion because these recalcitrant Arabs (and their primitive style of management) are beyond reform.
As I see it, the brutal fact of the matter is that the HCT is the SOS dressed up in a silk stocking. Mr Barry Keywood has been hired so that the MLI can have their own silk stockings.
Call me cynical, but there is only a finite number of ways you can teach English. Throwing money at these places has never proven to work. It's time for a serious paradigm shift.

Face it, if you're going to work in the ME, you're going to be a pawn in a game whose rules you'll never really know.
Just like in the real world.
So just keep stepping, fetching, and collecting your pay.
(And you think *you're* cynical?)

Dear Doctor Ds - my sincere apologies. I was using the Emirati grading system (highly inflated)! |
Nice job of getting the rank and file out of the closet, Omar. Accurate or not, your assessment rates as MLI Post Of The Month just for its power to arouse.

Having worked in both, I'd say that it is a fair rather than troubling assumption. Of course there are escapees in both directions. It comes down to the individuals running the show whether things improve in MLI or not - but the lack of whinging about HCT compared to the buckets about MLI on this website, does suggest doing it the HCT way (whatever variant / hybrid form that might be) should be a tonic for the place. That is a sweeping generalisation and I know there are parts of the HCT that are not squeaky clean - but it reflects my personal experience of the two institutions, and what I know about the HCT in general.
Crucial to the possiblility of improvement is how much leeway GHQ has given to the HCT to implement reform. Any info on this front? |
