| Ludwig, I am not talking about him, I am talking about me. Part timers at this company are required to give papers, passport and tax is deducted from pay. As stated before, does that mean the government here has a database so when you go to get your money exchanged they can see you have another job?? |

| In my school the contract stipulated outside work by permission only, but asking permission required someone make a decision and actually take responsibility, so I never asked. I just took outside work when a good opportunity came along. When faced with this kind of dilemma, I believe one should take action first, then beg forgiveness later if necessary. Call it the Chinese way. |

Either that or the 'irrational and wholly illogical' way. Did Grundy not use a similar line of defense? |

| I have been wondering about this topic also/ The second employer, part time , four hours a week, asks for passport and visa information and they deduct tax. What happens when you want to convert money at the bank and the bank brings up the records?? which states there are two employers?? No tax apparently is paid from contract job, but if I want to exchange money, the bank wants contract and other details that have been covered at Daves here. I think the school needs to get a statement from the government that you take to the bank saying there is no tax owing, but then there is this other part time job that says I have paid so much tax?? I hope this is clear what I am saying. Is there such a thing as a database or record in the computer filed by passport numbers with the government?? |
I had this experience too - a fulltime job (not subject to taxation), and a part-time job that came with the duty to contribute tax to the local authority.
The local authority demanded a formal letter from my first employer to be hired by the second one; interestingly, they didn't tote up the two incomes - which they certainly should have. In that case, I would have paid dearly.
I did pay a tidy percentage - 25% - off my second income, which was in hourly wages that totalled between 24 and 30 a month; at a rate of RMB 150, I seldom made more than 4000 extra; remember, 4000 is the threshold from which on you pay tax (officially).
I can tell you that the greed of some TEFLers has cost them dearly! One guy was found out by his slave-driver owner; I have no sympathy for her, but I must say my TEFLing colleague erred too when he accepted private students on the side in his flat. His employer duly visited him exactly when the lesson was in progress. What a mess when she turned up and scattered 4 self-paying adult students!
He found himself banished to the NE - away from sunny Guangdong!
Deportation is not likely; what is more likely to happen is that the cops confiscate your illicit earnings, and perhaps slap an extra fine on you!
I think the ban on work outside your employment is reasonable. Our employers have sponsorship responsibilities for us. Besides, China wants to be in control of how many foreign nationals are making a living here. You can't possibly be upset about this!
Having said this, I have always been allowed to have extra work - except in my first two jobs. Many of my former bosses or colleagues actually recruited, or passed on information from enquirers to me. |

the best "pt" jobs I have gotten and a recent job also, was with the blessing of my current school, in fact, the dean gave them my cell number. but, I sign nothing. my "pt" contact has my cell number and I receive an envelope each week after I finish class. again, I sign nothing. and my Visa and contract are with my current school, and the "pt" group knows that the school has first choice on times, ect. this has never been a problem in China, so far.
but things change overnight here so keep your eyes and ears open, and let us all know if anything changes. TIC. |

Hey Roger,
"Deportation is not likely; what is more likely to happen is that the cops confiscate your illicit earnings, and perhaps slap an extra fine on you!"
Has this happened and if so has it happened recently(the last year or so)? |
