Good decision Janice.
I think Stephen summed it up pretty well. |

Yeah. What Gordon said.
Janice, take the time to get a real degree. Think of it as an investment in yourself and your future. Yeah, it takes time and it costs money, but it's worth it.

I'm going to 'purchase' my BA online. Unfortunately it will take 2 years of full time study. I get a year's dispensation for 3 years of engineering and a year of physics. The course coordinators are obviously not mathematically inclined
I can do it anwhere in the world and in the end I will have a degree that's indistinguishable from the on-campus degrees at the same university. I can also defer payments forever - if I never return to Australia I never have to pay! Wheee!
Now that's what I call a bargain |

Oh, it's possible to earn a B.A. without entering a classroom. My point was, and still is, paying any entity for a piece of paper is nothing more than throwing good money after bad. That said, I don't mean there is no value in a distance learning program, simply because there are many very good ones.
In fact, the university I just graduated from (an accredited, top 20, public university) offers a B.A. entirely by distance. The major is "Liberal Studies," the tuition is in-state, no matter where the student lives, and financial aid is, indeed, available.
I have to tell you, I was a little miffed that the professor of the Calculus course is the same guy I had in a classroom. He lets his distance students use a calculator ... he never let us. Grrrr.
If anyone is interested, PM me for details.

Yes, HECS/PELS is a godsend!!! I just might do the same thing as you except I'll be doing a Master's in TESOL when I get 'round to it. Only problem is: the government is wanting to charge interest instead of just the inflation rate. |

Yes well, don't get me started on the Australian government! We need regime change!
'Liberal Studies'? Ick! I'm doing mine in philosophy - there can never be too many naval gazers, and I hear there's a lot of money in it - at least for the universities. And chicks dig that stuff. If I had a dollar for every time I've heard "Ooh baby, you're so SMART! Talk clever to me! Oooh yeah!" I'd be...well...um, broke actually - but that's not the point!
Open Learning Australia is a corporation owned and operated by half a dozen or so Australian universities, and real ones at that. They have buildings and everything! To do a specific degree you have to take a certain number of units at the particular uni, but the balance can be done with any of the other unis. Macquarie uni (where I'm doing mine) offers history/politics, sociology, and starting next year, philosophy (whee!).
About the only one that directly relates to being a sweatshop clown...um, I mean 'ESL Professional', is a MA in linguistics at Monash.
Any Aussies 'gone foreign' without a degree might want to have a look. You never know when you might want to get a real job.
