I had been teaching ESL 3 years before I decided to take the ICAL online course. I just wanted to find more ways of improving my teaching and I think the ICAL course really did help. When I do have the time and the money, I will take the CELTA just because it has a good reputation and for the learning experience. With my experience teaching and my online TEFL certificate, I haven't had any problems finding employment.

The course I'm currently enrolled in is an online course(Here's the Link)
http://www.bridgelinguatec.com/TeacherTrainingCourses/home.html . As you can see if you hit the link, this is University of Cambridge's recommended online course.
I don't have anything to compare it to as I personally haven't taken any other online courses, I can only give you my opinion as to my experiences with the content and Tutor I have. In my opinion the course is definitely challenging. They say it's a 40-hour course consisting of 13 modules, but I have found the time you need to invest if you expect to do well is much more than that (In my case anyway). It is College level course work, with much of it requiring you to be creative and thorough. My experience with my Tutor (Ann Leonard) thus far, is that she is no slouch and demands top notch work out of her students. I get the impression that she will keep you on your toes and if you slip it will show in the grade you receive for that mod. Frankly I wouldn't want it any other way. I feel like I'm definitely getting my moneys worth.
As to whether it will prepare me for the challenges that teaching in China present? On it's own, I doubt it. That's why I turn to forums such as this for advice, and help with getting started. Combined with my sparkling personality and temperament, I can only hope it will be enough to carry me through that first teaching assignment.
In any case as far as online courses go, I would have no misgivings about recommending the above to anyone considering getting certified this way.

Hope this helps.

Respectfully

That's somehwat misleading don't you think? The link you mentioned refers to the onsite CELTA course, and not the online course you are taking.

Too bad they stooped to that level.

Not misleading at all. The link absolutely gives you the option of either the onsite or online course. We were discussing online options. Maybe better to pay attention to the content on the site before posting a response.

Good thing paying attention is what I do best Wink

I think if one were to simply check, you could find that Cambridge has no association with TEFL or TESOL courses. Just go to their website and see.

I said it was misleading because you have linked Cambridge to a 40 hour online TEFL course, something I'm sure they would not appreciate. Following your quote...

Quote:

...it is quite misleading. Bridgelinguatec offers a CELTA course, which is authorized by Cambridge. Clearly, from the link you provided, the onlne TEFL course has nothing to do with Cambridge...only Bridgelinguatec.

That leads me to one of two conclusions. Either you are taking the course but have somehow been lead to believe that Cambridge is offering you an accredited course (which they are not) or you work for Bridgelinguatec and are here to mislead others into believing that Cambridge will offer them an accredited online course (which they will not). Fool or deceiver you are...I suspect the latter.

But hey, don't believe me. Let's point this out to someone over at Cambridge to get the official word. I sent them an email asking to clarify this. I'll be sure to post what they have to say. Meanwhile, you can check the UCLES site (the org that accredits the CELTA amongst other courses) to look high and low for a TEFL online course.

Do you also support fraudulent advertising?

DELTA online is a great idea. I'm all for it. It's not a TEFL course though, nor is it offered by Bridgelinguatec, according to the link posted by DistantRelative

What was posted by DR is this

What you can clearly see from the link is that is not Cambridge's recommended online course. UCLES themselves say this about it, in an email sent to me this morning.

Quote:
Bridgelinguatec's online TEFL program is not accredited by
UCLES/Cambridge ESOL, their CELTA course though is. CELTA cannot be
taken online.

So please, pay attention as the advice went earlier.

Very good. Consider this education for you. Don't waste it. Who cares for the mine is better than yours game. What matters more is that people aren't scammed by imposters in the Newbie forum, people who expect good advice from a reputable site like Dave's.

Interesting wall you've chosen for graffiti.

Your points are fine, though the exchange seems to be with yourself?

Take a little closer look

What a bunch of wasted space to try and be right Guy. Your original beef was that the link didn't show an online option which it absolutely does. So you were wrong period. Unlike you I am willing to admit I was wrong. Apparently Cambridge doesn't endorse or associate itself with Bridges online option. My apolgies to anyone whom I gave the impression that it did.
Beyond that my original endorsement of Bridges Online course still stands.

Respectfully,

Shawn
