If you are talking about US3000.00 then take the deal, on the other hand if you are talking about RMB3000.00 you are being had!
Then again, there are volunteer teachers, who are working for room n board.... believe it or not!
Shanghai is NOT expensive. Definitely NOT!!!
Beijing I recently found out is more expensive than Shanghai.
I LOVE SHANGHAI!

My impression of Shanghai is that like Beijing it is more expensive than other parts of China, but not in any way comparable to western prices.
A good salary for a standard tefl job would be around 13,000 in Shanghai I reckon. A qualified teacher in an international school like the one mentioned in the first post would be able to live pretty well and save a lot too.
I never get these things that say Beijing and Shanghai are some of the most expensive in the world. They must compare the costs of getting a full roast with all the trimmings or something. |

I am actually quite fond of Shanghai, I love it here!
Fight for your rights and DON'T BE AFRAID TO DEMAND, if they can't provide it for you, go somewhere else.
Cheers

| Most top flight international schools in Shanghai and Beijing pay in this ballpark. My wife and I both work at the largest one in the city and we really enjoy it. At which shool will you work? There are several new international schools, but I have visited most coaching different sports teams. |

denver,
Any idea whether your school will be hiring additional teachers for the next semester?
Thanks,

Tsushima, pay no attention to Robert. He was born angry and things have rapidly deteriorated ever since. He's actually a deranged Buddhist Nun laboring in a Shanghai bordello, chained to a bedpost, giving lip service to Chinese bureaucrats and foreign investors. But he gives good .... umm .... advice. Sometimes.
Shanghai is a wonderful city. Check previous posts to determine the salary range. It can be relatively expensive. Lots of expats wouldn't trade places with anyone. Hell, I'd even accept RL as a roomo (temporarily) for the opportunity to live (comfortably) in Shanghai (in a well paid position).
Best of luck to you!

Hi everyone!.....Well, overall, Shanghai seems to get the thumbs up from you guys, so I'm quite getting into the idea! I'm starting work in January, but I'm 'popping over' for a week (if you can say that about going to the other side of the world!) in November to visit the school and check out the situation. Sherloq - my school is SRIS (Rego) and is a year old. What kind of clothes will I need in November? Woollies? Winter coat? I've been living in Dubai for a while now, so I think the weather is going to come as a bit of a shock! |

Good, look forward to Shanghai. In November just carry a jacket, it's not quite winter coat weather. However, if you need a winter coat later you are in luck because several markets in Shanghai have great selections of (cough, cough) Northface outerwear. I paid (after bargaining) about 150 RMB for one last year and it kept me warm. Then there are all the other shops that sell nice warm sweaters and socks from such western brands as Polo, Tommy Hilfiger, etc.
Per rent: YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY MORE THAN 2500 RMB A MONTH FOR A ONE BEDROOM. You could if you wanted luxury, but you can do just fine for less. Don't even bother with real estate agents - just go to www.thatsshanghai.com (classifieds section) and post the price range and general area you seek, and mention you are not looking to pay any realtor fees. OR, you could ask a Chinese coworker to help you. This is how I found both the apartments I rented in Shanghai.
The last place I had was really nice, completely furnished with appliances and fixtures that were bought the day before I moved. It was a nicely sized studio in a quiet and neat area of Pudong... hardwood floors, enclosed balcony, 7-8 minute walk to the bus stop, 4 minutes to a well-stocked and clean grocery and on the first floor of a standard six-floor Chinese building, very secure. I paid 1300 RMB and my friend found it on the internet, so I paid no realtor fees.
Before that I paid 2000 RMB a month for a similar pad but on the 18th floor with a marvelous view of the river/city and 10 minutes walk to a subway station. Living near a subway station hikes it up, but the bus system is great and it is better to live near a couple of useful bus lines.
IF you get an unfurnished apt you can bop on over to IKEA and drop about 12000 RMB (1500 USD) and buy a bed, a big padded comfy sofa and loveseat, tables and chairs, and the other large furniture for your whole house. I am in Chicago now and the idea of spending only 1500 USD to get a bunch of IKEA stuff for your house here is laughable.
PM me if you want some websites in Chinese where landlords list their properties, or if you want more specific info about Shanghai. I can easily get them from my friend, the kind soul who helped me find my place. |

OK, I am a rookie here, never been to China...but I see no way that Shanghai might be considered one of the most expensive cities in the world....Woa!
I am contemplated a position with housing and benefits and a 30, 000 USD salary per year. THis beats teaching in the US because taxes and living expenses are subsidized.....
I think it is a good deal....Don't you all???
Please, I would really appreciate your advice.
Thank you !!!

| There are the corporate Westerners who are living it up here, but the average salary of local people in Shanghai is only 3000 RMB a month, so this tends to keep the prices down |
Mate, I think you're pulling random figures out of the hat again
Anyway, like anywhere, Shanghai can be either cheap or expensive depending how you wish to live your lives here. I'm ok here - no immediate financial problems on the horizon. Wait, while I ask the security guard, the noodle seller & the cleaning ladies if they are ok on their 3000rmb per month!
