That's for sure! Worse is working in Iraq these days. Can't understand even the humanitarian aid people being there - everyone is in danger. |
One must admire their courage, though.

I just got an email from UNICEF that they need help in putting their schools back together and I really don't know who'd be crazy enough to go over and help out. I wrote back and volunteered to send books and school supplies but I wouldn't go and help out with teaching or building the schools again. |
Some foreigners are in Iraq for the money. I don't know how true the stories are, but I've read that some - the mercenaries - are getting about $1.000 per day.
The humanitarian people live on almost a pittance, so far as I'm told, and I think they must be very committed. One has to respect people like that.

Thanks to W the world is a much nastier place today than it was four years ago. |
Indeed it is. It's more nasty, and more dangerous. W has created a large, previously non-existent class of well-armed insurgents, and provided them with American soldiers to use as target practice
One wonders how he gets away with this "reverse Midas touch" - everything he touches fails or blows up in his face, or more often than not someone else's.
Why do Americans tolerate this |

For enough money I might take my chance!!! I like adventure. Maybe $15,000 a month salary would lure me to Iraq. |

I lived in Germany a few years ago and I dream of returning. Outside of politics directly dealing with American foreign policy issues, I find the level of intelligence among most Germans, especially ex-DDR's is extraordinary. They have the ability to speak on politics, if that is your cup of tea, of many different regions, primarily European, and have a wonderful view of life. Yes it is true that the German Industrial machine is slowing down and getting a little rusty, perhaps carrying the burden of the whole of Europe (minus France) on its back. The employment rate is very high, and the social welfare system is really good for those on it, but due to vast unemployment, (last I knew Berlin at 18.6%) and the Bundesrepublik is about a few billion Euros in debt, those benefits are going to change and perhaps a few people will have to work off their beer gut the developed! Due to these extreme circumstances life in Germany is diminishing for business extras such as corporate English classes, or even individuals spending extra money of luxuries like English courses. These events in the economy are making it harder for TEFLers and the like to make a decent living, even if some of us hold University jobs, the pay is not that great and the taxes, as we all know are extraordinary. For me, I believe in perception of quality of life and how I view myself as being successful or not. In Germany, I perhaps had one of the most intellectually stimulating years of my life in Berlin, with the material possession side being less then advantageous for what some people back in our countries would consider great. My fondest memories are still of being with a group of friends sitting in a bar called Lori on Neue Schonhauser Alle or any of the many bars in Kruezberg (I forgot how to spell it, my apologies) discussing god-knows-what drinking and smoking listening the DJ spin until about 3am. To me, this was Germany, this is what I was looking for when I finished University and that is exactly what I got. So I apologize for being long winded, I guess my answer to the original question posted in the survey is yes, my life is better having lived in Germany, I was taught to think about the world and see there is life outside of America and the University and no matter what I will always have fond memories of Berlin. Ich bin einer Berliner! |

'Ich bin einer Berliner'
Clearly your German teacher only had limited success in conveying to you a knowledge of basic German grammar. |

JZ, what if you heard Americans complaining about Clinton or Carter? Would that be 'sacrilege'? |

I wrote on the discussion link "What Germans should not do in America"

P.S. I did not vote for Bush but it is not mystifying why people voted for Bush!! Maybe it shows that Europeans are as intolerant of other opinions as Bush!!! |
I do not even agree with Bush's politics!! I just have problems with the way Americans in Europe act. There are two things that young Americans do that disturb me. My first problem is that these peoples complaints are just American bashing and Bush bashing. It is one thing to not agree with Bush and say that I do not agree with Bush for the following reasons 1,2,3! My experience is that many of these Americans in Europe just go around Bush sucks, ha, ha! Just some blank statements. These people are like teenagers that go around talking like rappers because it is cool. It is my feeling that these people just shout out these blank statements because these beliefs are the ones that young Americans in Europe should have (by this I mean the accepted believes of young Americans in Europe). Secondly these people run around saying things like Hod.

I find this to be childish and like I said before maybe I should not have used sacriligious. These people run to Europe and complain instead of staying at home and trying to change things and get Kerry elected. So poro, unlike what you think. I do not support Bush's policies. I just have a problem with how young Americans display their opposition to Bush. |
