aramas: what is oxbridge? is that a cross between oxford and cambridge? and the first level degree is in three years, correct? and one prepares for the exams without necessarily attending the lectures? very different from the american system. in the american university it's my guess that one can't do well without attending most of the lectures.

A lecture in a British University is when the lecturer talks and you listen, as opposed to a seminar where you talk. or a practical where you do things.

At Oxford and Cambridge lectures are not obligatory, though in many subjects in practise they are. What is obligatory is sleeping the requisite number of nights, though it is the legal profession where to become a barrister you have to eat a fixed number of meals.

You will also have one or two supervisions a week where on your own, or with a maximum of two others, you will have your work discussed with the teacher. Missing out on those is big trouble.
