Hey Brooks. Did you ever find that little place called Angies in Sagamiono that has those 1L pale ale mugs for 600 yen? |

I know where it is but I haven't been inside.
What sort of beer costs 600 yen there? For 1L well that is a good price.
Well I can always go there after work.
I don't feel good today, but at least I can see what they have. |

| I believe it's a pale ale, similar to a Sam Adams pale ale. God it's been a few years, I can't remember the name but it's quite nice, and its a good place to grab a chair and read for a while. Pretty decent little pizzas too. |

That thread seems to have disappeared. Anyone have the contract details for this gig handy? |

It's for Rikkyo University.
http://recruit.rikkyo.ac.jp/content.html
14 classes per week
Must make a report after every class.
Classes are Monday through Saturday
Get paid a mere 4.8 million
"Instructors are expected to devote two class hours (three hours) a week to office hours and one class hour (an hour and a half) a week to meet with their supervisor" |

Ah, I saw this in JREC. Still, there are worse ways to get your foot in the door here in Japan (judging from some recent threads here). If you're a recent MA grad and need the experience, this wouldn't be a terrible start. |

Fair enough. I concede that it's not a great university posting. Is it that terrible though? I mean, on the scale of "worst ever".
It would be better than pretty much any eikaiwa/dispatch ALT ("dispatch professorship" ) outfit. Would it not? |

The way things seem to be going here I often wonder if I haven't incredibly lucked out.
I do not have a diploma ( currently working on one though ) and got to Japan because I had 3 years experience teaching at an Eikaiwa in Canada.
I got lucky with an unusual set-up where our company is basically contracted out to teach course within one rather large engineering company.
I teach about 6 hours a day, four days a week for a salary nearing 400,000 yen per month. It's for the most part a very pleasant environment and I have my meals and transportation subsidized by the company.
Recently though I've been of two minds. One, I want to improve myself and beef up my resume for any unforseen incidents which may arise in the future. I'm getting a little older, nearing 35, and wondering if it is "ok" to basically be an eikaiwa teacher for the rest of my life.

1. Yes, it's okay to be an eikaiwa teacher for your entire career, if that's what makes you happy.
2. Based on this information, you are not an eikaiwa teacher though anyway.
3. It would still definately be to your advantage to get your degree (if not your MA) because otherwise you are assuming that the job you have now you will continue to have for your entire career. |

Most private highs have classes Monday through Saturday, with two Saturdays off a month. The pay is lower. The number of contact hours is usually higher. They usually ALSO have mandatory meetings (even though most of the the teachers don't know enough Japanese to understand them).
So I don't think this is all that bad. |

This is ridiculous but shows people where things are heading for university level teaching. There are many jobs like this in the Tokyo area. Just a hair above an eikaiwa in terms of pay, benefits and prestige. |

| I went to an interview at one uni that was only paying 3.6 million per year. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed when I didn't get the job. |

Sorry to be pedantic but I must disagree with some of the assertions on this board regarding uni gigs.
1) Even though dispatchers like Westgate have made inroads in Kanto (and Kansai too?) out in the provinces they don't have much of a presence I believe.
2) The low paying (3.6 million a year) jobs have been around for at least as long as I have been in the university teaching game (7 years).
3) If you know some Japanese and don't have fixation with working in Kanto or Kansai there are not a flood of applicants for some jobs. In the last couple of years I have sat on hiring committees for jobs where you could count the applicants on 1 hand for 'tenure track' positions. |

| Agreed! I have friends working outside Kansai and Kanto who have said the same thing regarding hiring for tenure track positions. A lot of candidates don't want to live in those areas or simply do not hear about the adverts. As for pay, unis have a formula for determining salaries so a person with limited experience and a few publications (if any!) could find themselves at the bottom of the scale. Of course, they can make more over time if they publish and jump through the appropriate hoops. |

Hey Glenski, what's the going rate for university jobs then? I saw this Rikkyo job advertised, 320,000 a month seemed pretty low, but you get a 3 month bonus as well so that seems to bring the salary to almost the 420,000 a month other universities offer.
The thing that puts me off here is that you must work 6 days in a row!!! Well, five days and half a Saturday! WTF? Even most Japanese don't do a six day week!? |
