That's the whole point though is that people outside the US think they know everything about the US because they get our tv shows, movies and music. They irony is that of course they only get the ones that do well in their home countries which more often than not are total crap. Baywatch is syndicated around the world, 60 minutes not so much, even though 60 minutes has always had higher ratings inside the US! People need to consume with discresion, a grain of salt and that the knowledge television programs and other media that are sold to their country are more reflective of the tastes and class of their country than those of the US. Just because I've seen a few movies about the artic circle doesn't mean I can go there and start telling people what's what. |

Dis: " ...Just because I've seen a few movies about the Artic Circle doesn't mean I can go there and start telling them what is what."
So, presumably, you've had extensive experience in International Relations and ---- best of all ---- heavy combat experience in an urban terrorist environment.
That Cute Kid audition will very definitely not get you a contract with Jack In The Box.
cheers,

Here it is again. I'll send you a large print version if you like since you found it so hard to find. Or perhaps you just mask your lack of insight with sophmoric retorts. Oh no, that's unthinikable.

Ex, I'm sorry that you can't read between the lines. So here it is: the question is whether the American media that is consumed outside of the United States, pure drivel for the most part, is more of a comment on the tastes, or lack therof, of those countries consuming them or whether they are a fairly accurate depection of America and it culture?
It's pretty simple really and quite rationale as well. I'll try crayons next time if you can't grasp it this time around. |

Dis, you sound like some newbie assistant college prof with that "the question is" stuff. Next it's gonna be "what you must understand is ...." Or how about "to put this into persPECtive ..."
So drop yer .... and grasp those crayons and fess up in triple dayglo: Do you ever post anything worthy of a rational response?
Benno: Bush is an idiot? He's a rich guy who's President, fachrissake, kickin' ass an' takin' down the names.
While Benno is .... in Harbin?
American movies? Don't watch them. Wal-Mart? Don't shop there. McDonald's? Don't eat there.
Enjoy Harbin!

| The truth is that Americans are no smarter or stupider than anyone else. My point is that unfortunatrly the majority of American stuff that reaches overseas is terrible and very little of the good stuff gets out. This means that people like me have to have a standard prolouge ready when they meet people for the first time and tell them they are Americans to reassure them that they are not one of the gun totting Bush war loving McDonalds eating Wal Mart shopping fools that they take Americans for. I don't think any country doesn't have popularized crap and less than wonderful leaders, look at Howard and Blair for god sake, its just that we are much bigger and richer than most industrialized countries so we have more volume and reach for our crap. |

Bush is not a self-made man, ex. His daddy and cronnies bank rolled several miserable business outings until gettin him a minority share in the Texas Rangers. Then they bank rolled his run for governaor and president. Being rich doesn't make you smart, nor does being president-especailly in W's case. Ask yourself honestly what George W would have been if his daddy and grandaddy were not rich and powerful men? A drunk? A coke head? A gas station attendant? President of the USA? Get real.
Ex, I'm sorry that you still can't address or even comprehend the topic of the previous post. Here's a forum more up your alley http://www.clanofidiots.com/forum/ |

Jeez, Dis, I ain't had no problems lately by just tellin' up straight up that I'm a gun-totin', rootin'-tootin' Bush lovin', McDonald's Kentucky Fried, Wal-Mart shoppin', war-lovin Yo Yo who loves all things Shrek and Schwarzenegger! Gave me half off a two hour Yankee Special Threesome at Happy Hour and ast me "Wuz it good for you too?" But then, sometimes some people just don't have no appreciation for American culture!

sorry for my religious cliche about the usa. i thought this thread died (i hoped so anyway)--i guess benno did hurt me a bit with his uncouth language. this is why i used to just read the esl boards and didn't post. the korean and other boards are pretty rough, but perhaps it takes a certain type of person to write the kind of stuff/words benno does--scary picture too.
i was really impressed with george orwell's down and out in paris and london. he tried to live with the poor and disenfranchised. i remember when liberals took orwell as their savior in the eighties. i just like his prose also.
cheers. |

| The thing about "Down and Out in London and Paris" is that Orwell was not just "slumming it" being the world famous author trying to "get down with the people" but really a poor slob who lived in filth and worked in terrible conditions in a slew of mind numbing jobs. I liked it but I found "Homage to Catalonia" to be much more insightful into how 1984 came about. It documents how supportive he was of the communists, took a bullet in the neck for them in combat, and how that respect slowly fell apart. It also shows his first hand expereince with the rising of the facist Franco government, which of course he was no fan of. "Down and out" though is more entertaining and does not require any delving into early twentieth century Spanish politics to get a handle on it. I still prefer "Homage", however. |
