No. The required qualifications (relevent to this discussion) for an ARC as a foreign English teacher are as follows: a BA from a recognized university OR a two year diploma AND a tesl certificate. Check into this. You'll find it's true.
Any certificates required in addition to a BA, specific majors or subsequent degrees/ specializations are requirements for the specific job set by the employer and not the government for ARC purposes.
This isn't to say that a BA isn't absolutely more prefered. Some schools may not be aware of the possibility of sponsoring an AA/tesl teacher or may not want to for their own reasons. Still it is possible. |

Steve, I have found from my own personal experience that this is the case quite often. My local supervisors and staff, oddly enough, do not always know what the rules/regs/laws are exactly.
One reason, I think is that the local admin staff at language schools normally have a high turn-over rate and once a member of the admin staff learns the 'ropes' so to speak, they sooner or later quit without briefing the new staff.
Also, laws change - like they did earlier this year.
I find I always have to ask, ask again, talk to the police and even come to BB Boards to make sure.
I've been burned a couple of times, and so have my colleagues, for taking the word of local admin staff about visa extensions and having to/not having to leave the country for visa renwals, etc.
And the fact that I have often been given 2 or 3 different answers from as many people tells me that many people just don't know.
Bottom Line: You DO NOT need a university degree to teach legally in Taiwan. |
