I believe (wink, wink, nudge, nudge) that the topic is a rhetorical question meaning quite simply that people are ignorant everywhere. It's stunning how raven was able to twist that very neutral statement into another anti-American rant. There are the underprivileged masses but then there is the rest of the world and the basic fact is that people are uninformed and intellectually lazy uniformly in the first world. There are fluctuations like why the French know more about Spanish politics than the Japanese but most of these instances are the result of geography or similar circumstances and not one nationalitys propensity for knowledge or intelligence over another. To write this trend off as being an American trait consigns you to the very ranks of the intellectually lazy that you are chiding others for being a part of.

I think we've been barking up the wrong tree here.

There is a difference between being ignorant and not being conscious. It's consciousness that we should be inculcating. Some folks are ignorant because they are too poor to be able to interact with a sufficient number of different folks and places. In Latin America many fall into that category. They can still be conscious. And many are.

In places like the US there is no excuse for ignorance--but there is a reason: folks from the US, in the majority, think they are the only people who matter and that no country apart from the US matters. They are both ignorant and unconscious.

The unconscious is a realm populated by unrealized desires, bogey men and things that go bump in the night. When you live there your mode of life is that of fear.

Thanks, moonraven. Another classic. Keep it up!

Moonraven Exclamation What a bloody funny post. I fell off my chair laughing. Laughing Laughing Laughing

As a reward I'll also assign you the title of Director of Methodology at Rabbit Island. It will be your task to guide us into building an institution that will raise the conciousness of the rabbits of Rabbit Island. Yes, it was wrong of me, perhaps even evil to think of killing the cute little furry but unenlighted and generally worthless indigenous inhabitants of the island. Yes, moonraven, it's all about raising the conciousness of those less fortunate than oureselves, who were born in an enlightened state.

antartica
Yes, indeed. We'll start a franchise. What's the conciousness level of the birds there like?

Sir, you disgust me.....http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pitcairn_sexual_assault_trial_of_2004

As I said, everyone knows everyone... in a very Biblical sense. I too am disgusted.

I have absolutely nothing of value to contribute to this topic. So here's my opinion:

Mama said stupid is as stupid does. Can anyone tell me what the hell this means?

Chivas Regal and Diet Coke
I forgot her name because the taxi man was barking

If you mix Chivas with Diet Coke; you know what "stupid is what stupid does". Very Happy

distiller--Apparently logic is simply lost on you.

1. I didn't have to "twist" anything, as this thread simply budded like a hydra from the thread "Are American (sic) Ignorant?". It was not, by the way, an anti-American rant, as my post clearly indicated that Latin America (last I checked it was part of America) does have some conscious folks--despite the obstacles here. It was also not a rant, but a measured commentary--and yes, it was anti-US.

2. Are you trying to tell us that folks in the US are NOT ignorant?

3. Anyone who accuses this bird of being intellectually lazy should spend just a couple of days doing what she does on a daily basis. It will wear you out, but mayalso raise your IQ a few points.

And to the Rabbit-obsessed (may say something about copulation style?), no one that I am aware of was born conscious--not even Buddha. Consciousness is arrived at by hard work--and a certain number of happy accidents.

What accident marked your transformation to the concious, moonraven?
I've been knocked unconcious in an accident before but never concious.

But I'm a bit disappointed to learn that we can't teach conciousness to the poor fluffy bunnies and birdies.
