OK, I'm going to side with the original poster here, but just a few points to make:
(1) 8000 is decent pay for Shanghai, but we need to know far more information than this to make any sort of accurate judgment. If we're only relying on this figure, plus average figures of 3500-4500 for Shanghai unis, then no wonder all these inaccurate judgments are being bandies around here. By the way those latter figures if 3500-4500 probably came from the Dave's Archives or Job Board.
(2) nativespeaker is right, however, to exercise caution whenever there is a major change in a particular school or overall market. If that school indeed offered 3500 in the past, then suddenly jumped to 8000, I would also wonder why. Actually, the overall market trend is that salaries for EFL teachers in Shanghai are on the decline in terms of real value. For a university to buck that trend, I would definitely be on my guard as well.
(3) As GWOW said himself, there are many jobs in Shanghai that pay more than this. So what advantage would nativespeaker have by discouraging people from taking the uni job, SUPPOSING that is his motive? Not much, because 8000 isn't too spectacular in the overall market. On the other hand, such a salary is extremely good for a university.
(4) None of this discussion really matters anyway, because most people advertise and apply for jobs directly from Dave's Job Board.

Sho' nuff you can get university jobs at over 6,000 a month -- if they k you're referring to is kuai -- several universities in Guangdong pay about 8, plus free accommodation, and Guangxi pays 6,800 plus free accommodation.
I wouldn't be surprised if DianJi were doing a little bit of a bait and switch, though. My university in SHanghai advertised that they paid 7,000 a month, but didn't include any housing. If you want to live on campus, you only get 4,500, or if you live off, you need to find the apartment and pay rent yourself. |

Uncharacteristically, perhaps, I have up to now avoided wading into this sea of invective. However, after separating economic analysis from speculation, it seems that one is still left with this question: why is any university in Shanghai (even taking into consideration that the hours are a bit longer) paying so much over the "market" price of RMB 3,500 - 4,500?
Another factor that has possibly been overlooked: universities are dynamic institutions. What a university was, say, two or three years ago is not necessarily what it is today. The top leadership may have changed, the wai4 ban4 may have changed, and so on.
The subject seems worthy of calm discussion. |

Don't know why this ad freaks everyone out. 8000 (actually the ads say 7-8000) for 24 houras is the SAME THING as 4500 for 16 hours and overtime. They are just giving more hours to fewer teachers.
On another note I wonder why more places dont do this. Give 24 rather than 14 hours in a contract (with a higher salary) and save a lot of air bonuses etc. Looking at salary aside from hours is meaningless. My best job here was a base of 3500. With overtime it turned into 6500 with 2 full days off and no afternoons or evenings. |

| Gee, I'm kind of wondering why yesterday's interesting, informative, and very positive post by Shanghai bound (Rebecca)--who identified herself as a Dian Ji teacher--was deleted. |
