The biggest issue here in Japan is that NO ONE locks their bike down to immovable stuff.
I mean... HELLO?! Anyone home??? In Canada, on university Campus, I had to use 2 U-locks. One, to lock the front wheel to the frame, and the other to lock the rear wheel and frame to a bike rack or parking sign, or whatever... THEN, I had to use a rivetted or padlocked seat lock which attached it to the frame, to prevent my seat from being snatched. Finally, I had to remove all my quick-release bolts and replace them with regular ones... Because even when there was nothing else to steal, the bolts themselves would be stolen and cost me a good $20 or so to replace each time.
I'm not saying we should have to resort to such measures here in Japan, but maybe a slight re-think about leaving one's bike in such a place where anyone walking or driving by can pick it up (even though it's locked) and chuck it in the back of a pick-up or van and drive off with it...
Yeah, you'll be the only henna-gaijin wrapping steel cable around your bike, attaching it to a post, but then again, your bike will still be there later on.
Just a thought.
P.S. Sucks that your bike was stolen. Also happened to my wife. Brand new D2-issue Mamma-chare. Also, once we had over $50 worth of groceries stolen from the bike basket while we were in the video store getting a movie. Took all of 10 minutes.
My thought on crime in Japan: If there TRULY were no crime here, like people keep saying, stores would have no need for shoplifting alarms at the doors, and ATMs would have no need for security cameras monitoring 24/7. Right? |
