I spent some time the other day trying to dig for cheap airfares to spend the winter break in India. Unfortunately, being winter in Russia, everybody wants to go south to someplace warm. And I can't explain to the airline that I want to go to far northern India, where it is the off season. Could take a train to Tashkent first. But the overland route from there looks a little dangerous these days. I'm guessing Northern Afghanistan isn't really the place for unarmed naive Americans these days. That is, if you live through Tajhikistan (sp?). Then if you make it through Afghanistan there's Pakistan and then Kashmir. Maybe too much for winter break.

But I would love to go back. Dream life: one semester in Russia on subsistence wage (Fall probably), one semester in India eating rice and dahl, summer in America living at my folks place and working to pay for student loans and airfare.

I can't fault anyone who had a bad time in India. India isn't a love it or hate it kind of extreme place. Nothing in India is that simple. Everybody I know loves it AND hates it. But I would definitely go back. I would definitely recommend it.

The pollution may be bad in the cities, but why hang around in the cities?

India has some of the most beautiful mountain scenery anywhere in the world...
