Come to Korea, if you don't have at least US$1000 a month left over from your pay check you must have a heavy drinking habit.

Nope, they don't - at least not in Latin America. I work for one of the better-paying universities in Mexico: my pay is about $1100 US per month. In this part of the world, that rate of pay IS a lot of money; you can live very comfortably on $1000+ US monthly.

You really have to dig, but there are some decent paying jobs in Latin America, at least in Mexico. Greefield, a private secondary school in Mexico City starts at $1,500 usd per month for an English teacher. Add the benefits in and it clears $2000/mth before taxes.

Looking at the corporate world, there are hidden gems out there. I've met more than a few teachers in Mexico City earning over $20 us per hour in company EFL...suit and tie work.

Here in El Salvador, there are at least two schools that pay extremely well: The American School and the British School. Both pay about $2200 per month, if not more, depending on experience. The cost of living here is very low, and you might be surprised how much it is like the US here, that is if you live near or in San Salvador, where these schools are located. A good chance to brush up on your Spanish and have minimal culture shock.
