| moon, are you sure you don't mean 40-60 "feet?" This is the first I have heard of 100-150 foot waves touching down. CNN and NewsAsia have had 48+ hours to report on this, and neither has mentioned waves in excess of 100 feet. If that had really happened, Phuket would no longer be on the map. If you have that Yahoo! link let me know, because it has done a great disservice by posting inaccurate information. |

A friend of mine sent this from southern thailand
| Quote: |
Hey Kevin longtime no hear?
I was going to write but then......
A Huge FU &*^%$%% wave this morning ( 2 days now but feels like yesterday and it's effects are being felt in a big way by a lot of people and the temp. morgue is just one indication of how much havoc has been caused- it has grown to big, I myself saw 7 corpses yesterday) The whole thing started this morning with the surreal shaking coffee at the table, I was instantly brought back to Tokyo were this was a common occurence but nonetheless always a little unnerving -- as I watched the ever so slight little mouvments in my coffe cup and pondered by myself as I had no one to share my observations with....In general
Reporting from where I was in Phuket -Nai harn beach at the southern end and a lot less people than Patong also far less developed. As I left the beach the first wave had made the beach vanish I saw people hanging off trees as I was leaving the wave appeared in my back -= it was something out of the apocalypse or moses parting the sea in one direction and I thought it was bad in the Congo where I just got out of.. , then I saw the water go out again - and contrary to what I would have wanted to do? I did the opposite and left with my motobike then as I looked behing on the beach I was on I saw and inverse water fall it was so Fu*^%*))_ massive!!
That is a bit of it from Phuket...
Ciao, Pierre

Moonraven, why the hell do you have to try to turn every thread into a political argument? Does it really matter on this forum that chavez rushed to give aid and that other leaders were a little slower off the mark?
My group of friends lost one of its members on Ko Phi Phi. He gave his life saving the life of his brother's girlfriend. Why don't you think about the human tragedy before spouting off with your misguided political rubbish. You make me sick.

Matttheboy,
I'm sorry to hear about your loss. I fear that many of us will know someone or know someone who knew someone who was affected. I guess that's the downside of an internationally-oriented career/lifestyle--world tragedies affect us personally.
And I also am sickened to see this thread in particular (and so many other threads in general) potentially turned into a political holier-than-thou thread. People are dead. Does it really matter whose political views/access to accurate information are more "correct"?

I am trying to locate one of my colleagues who is in Thailand and headed towards Phuket. Very sad and tragic.
I just read that they found tens of thousand of bodies in northern Sumatra and the death toll is over 110,000. I fear it may hit 200,000 in the coming days. |

You can make donations to the American Red Cross on the amazon.com website. 100% of contributions will go directly to the Red Cross. |

Thank you to those on this thread who've provided links on where to give to the victims. I made this point on another thread too, that although we as teachers often, with reason, deride our pay, now is the time to reach into our pockets and give to those less fortunate. We may have to go without Starbucks or internet cafe, but there are those who, as I type this, are literally naked and starving and hurting, under the sky because they have no shelter. It doesn't matter who you give to--secular, Christian, Buddhist, there are many good aid orgs out there. Mr. Twisting and I chose to give Doctors Without Borders a donation, but there are many others out there. |

I saw your post on another thread and went to the Doctors Without Borders website. Thanks for listing them. I chose to give to them because it looks like a lot of the funds that they raise actually help people in need--little overhead.
