Move into the cheapest hostel you can find in a nearby big city, and just work the internet. Apply for as many jobs as you can, take the first offer that comes with housing.
I found myself a little short on cash when I arrived in Shanghai, I moved into a 55 RMB a night hostel, ate dumplings and street food three meals a day (10 - 12 RMB per day), and just bided my time. In a city other than Shanghai/Beijing, you could get by on 50 RMB a day.
There are soooo many schools in dire need, if you send out your resume 25 times a day, you can get something quickly. It may not be great, but in dire times, do what you gotta do. I suggest you find a private student willing to receive English lessons at the unheard of low rate of X RMB per hour... go to the local university and sell yourself for 50 RMB an hour or some ungodly low rate.
Good luck. |

Finally things are starting to look good for me. I posted the full story as promised. If any other people are having problems in China, or are not sure about which school to go to, please contact me. Over the last few months I have made many many contacts and I can share my knowledge and experiences to help other people.
What we foreign teachers out here need is some sort of 'teachers union', a third party we can go to when we have problems. |

What about that school? Was there any aftermath? Could you somehow sue the school for not arranging a visa in time for the time you were employed? Or what about keeping your passport away from you so that you couldn't deal with the situation? Isn't it illegal in the first place for schools to keep your passport? They really sticked you there ey.
Not a nice start of the year mate.
Good luck with your new start,

Things are starting to look good at last.
I am not sure about trying to sue the school, I should do really. This has nothing to do with the amount of money I lost due to them. It's just the principle of the thing. Something has to be done about these corrupt little A holes who think they can walk all over us foreigners to suit their greed.
If anybody has had any experience of handling these matters then please contact me. When I am settled into my new school, I will start looking for legal advice. If you know of or can recomend any good lawyers please do so. I have been fighting this for so long, I am not simply going to run with my tail between my legs, I will win this. |
