| alaska, although perhaps a little misguided, may have been referring to the use of the Internet in the latest U.S. presidential election. Several grassroots organizations and so-called "mainstream" candidates did use the Net to solicit contributions. |

And on this forum, a) how many of us are American and directly contribute to America's greatness, and b) how many of us actually contribute to an intellectual blossoming that is enhanced by teh use of teh Internet?
Perhaps this forum, being composed of teachers, has more than a typical share of B, but for the original poster's hypothesis to be correct, both would need to be true for many people, which plainly isn't. |
The internet is a tool, as is tv, radio, Mad Magazine. People use tools as extensions of themselves. That means to abuse others, to learn, to communicate, to spread propaganda, to steal, to love, to live, to satisfy perversions, to satisfy curiousities, and lots of other things.
I wonder...there is a whole new generation younger than mine that was born with the Internet in place. I'm not a parent, but I wonder exactly what the effects have been to have that internet in the home, as ubiquitous as the telephone, radio, and tv, on development. You know the old joke about parents having their kids program the VCR? The Internet and its use will always be a reflection of people and society, but there has to be room for the reverse to be true.
I read a very good book on this topic called Out of Control written by Kevin Kelly. It's available online for download http://www.kk.org/outofcontrol/ Very prophetic piece of writing (he wrote in the mid-90's. |

Maybe "geniuses" is the wrong word.
And it being a "world thing" is better put.
The Math connection: Not just math but all subjects. I believe interest to be the root source of "excelling". And boredom to be the greatest cause of not even giving "excelling" a chance. I imagine with so much more collaboration of many more minds, the probability of excelling will increase dramatically. Just a theory. |
