It does sound like a raw deal and a lot of work for a possible job that you don't even know if you are interested in. Keep looking or come to Japan and look yourself, it would be better that way as most schools do not hire from abroad, unlike Korea.

I asked my colleague about the school. He had heard of it. Apparantly it is in west Chiba, near the station. He had once met a foreigner who was the head teacher. He said that he believed that the school was very small.

Knowing what I know about Chiba, you can be pretty certain of finding an apartment pretty close to the school. Overall Chiba is a nice city by Japanese standards. I'd be living there myself right now if my wife didn't need to commute to Tokyo.

It sounds like your recruiter is a novice. A wise recruiter wouldn't give an applicant the name and location of the school out of fear of being sidestepped. It also sounds like their is no garuantee of a position through the recruiter, otherwise the recruiter wouldn't need a videotape to make the sale. I'm sure the school would be happy to cut the recruiter out of the mix if you sidestepped him/her. It's evil, but the recruiter could benefit from the learning curve.

Yes, it's definitely possible and recommended. You can learn a lot if you do the legwork yourself and make contacts directly with prospective employers. You will also have plenty of support from many people in this forum.

Sure it is. Spend some time checking out the many websites that post job listings. Such as Dave's, ELT News, gaijinpot and so on. Then contact the companies as per their request. Make sure that you have an electronic resume ready to send. A photo in the body of the email is a good idea as well. (many companies state that they will not open attatchments)
You just need to take that first step and then things will start to fall into place.

Good luck
