I could care less. I'm only taking part in this poll at all because of extreme boredom. |

The signal that I intend irony is in the use of "Murka" to mean "America".
I sentence you to return to 101 Writing class for one semester. Or failing that to keep your literary sensors switched on when reading texts written by adults. |
Oh!... So "Murka" means "America".... What happened to the first syllable? Still, very dult of you. Keep those irony signals blinking.

Heyyy, Scot, I'm under 40 - just - and I was cultured to distraction in school! You know, Billy Bob Shakespeare, Chuck Dickens, etc. I think we even got some Bobby Burns once!
Graham.
I do my washy and irony every weekend. |

There is some cheapo filter that thinks every second word in English is naughty. That is why Charles ****ens is censored.
My point is still that many "teachers" of English have not done much reading or experienced much Culture !! But then you see I am from that last generation to grow up before the idiot box came to dominate anglo-american life.
The non-exposure to the written word would explain why so many posters seem to be blind to irony, for example. Bryson thinks the inability to appreciate irony is what marks Murkans off from UKanians.
Do you think TV might be satanic in inspiration ? |

That would explain Rupert Murdoch and Silvio Berlusconi!
You're right, many younger teachers are frighteningly ignorant about culture, geography etc. My teachers really knew their stuff, and they knew how to teach it. |

Quite possibly... and since I don't have one at home every time my team are shown live I have to go down the pub and watch them along with satanic drinking practices - (they're a very stressful team to support).
As I'm generous to a fault I'd have to put in a word for b-boy - nearly 10 years of experience have shown me that the 'net is not always the best place for irony. It's populated by loads of people (I won't categorise them) who don't understand why I won't respond to their brief chat room introductions of 'asl?'...
In the meantime I'd like to experiment with a few English names..Sussex, Scunthorpe, Arsenal, um.... Maidenhead, Sandy Balls (it's a place in the New Forest), Breaky Bottom .... |

It also occurs to me that so rare is irony on this medium that when it pops its little head over the parapet it quite escapes my attention |

m 26 uk, wanna cyber?
Oops. hang on...
What I meant to say was, somebody ask Dave about a UK forum. I can't ask him again or he'll start suspecting I'm really some fungus that's growing on his forum, causing it to swell and mutate in unwholesome ways... |

Rob, You're so good at getting new forums, you should do it. Despite my original posting on this thread I'd really like to see a new UK forum. I'm right behind you. |

And for the record I did try to vote again in favour of a UK forum, but you can't vote twice. |

Um, sorry R, a and l ok for me but as for the s, well, I do like to raise the cultural awareness of asylum seekers!
Mind you, cyber is quite good for improving ones' foreign language skills. Done it only once, with a very large dictionary and some contextual guessing (heheh)...
