Once you are in Osaka, the tourist offices (the one in OCAT for example) have tons of info that is up to date, so they are a much better resource.

Thank you, I'll be sure to stop by the visitors center when I arrive.

You think so? It is Australian.

Gordon, what do you like about the Rough Guide?

Like someone else has posted, RG seems to cover more out of the way places better than LP. Living in Shikoku, the coverage is a bit better in RG than LP. Now I have both, but use RG more often, still both are quite limited. For instance, LP has about 4 pages on Nara. That's ridiculous really, since it is a major tourist site. IMO I think the LP maps are a bit better and I like their coverage of accomodation prices more too rather than a price range like RG quotes.

Lonely planet were caught in the global downturn in tourism booksales at a point when they were diversifying their product range so there was a bit of cutting back.

I'd put the Americanization down to that although it is an Australian publication there are quite a few American contributors.

My wife is the travel nut while she uses LP as a guide for accomodation and the like, she gets Dorling Kindersley Eyewitness Travel guides for more historical / cultural information (and pretty pictures)

The LP website and forums are worth checking out as well.
