You will get a similar response in China as well. I have to agree with Big John in that there is not as much anti Japanese sentiment on Taiwan as many of the other countries that were occupied by Japan before and during WW2. The only people I have encountered that continue harbor these kinds of anti Japanese sentiments on Taiwan are of course the more ignorant and the descendent's of the defeated Nationalist Chinese that fled to Taiwan after their own people kicked them out.
In fact many of the older Taiwanese look back at the Japanese colonial period as the good old days. That period was also the only time when Taiwan had any kind of rule of law. Crime was practically non existent and infrastructure was relatively better then, than what it is now. |

Jesus Christ...
I mean... Were you just trying to have a bad time there, or what? Why not go to a redneck bar in Arizona and when asked what countries you like say Iran and North Korea?
Don't you see how insulting national pride's kind of, like, a bad idea? |
First of all she knew I had lived and worked in Japan for four years when she agreed to hire me. She had said she thought Indea was the smartest country. So when she asked me, I said Japan. I had only been in Korea for a couple of weeks so I didn't know the culture yet. Besides even if I did I don't lie! Ever!
I found out later that Koreans are very insecure. They take everything personally. They got offended when I said I liked Japan because to most of them that meant that I didn't like Korea. Which is not true, well now it is. But then I could of liked both Korea and Japan as well as many other places.
Taylor, I plan on visiting Taipei, but I will be working for a couple of weeks somewhere else. And from what I have been told and reading on this thread I believe what you wrote to be true.
About Koreans: Actually, I am trying to forget about my experience in Korea. It is not good to hate. Bad for the soul. |

In reply to the original post:
Wages and available positions for foreign teachers on Taiwan are stagnating or even decreasing island wide as a result of recent government decrees banning English language learning in schools.

Good luck,

The reason is simple. Unlike Korea and the mainland Japan had a positive presence in Taiwan.
Taiwan was a colony of Japan for a long time and the Japanese set up a strong infrastucture. They set up the school system, forms of local government, the health system, etc...
Also, along with the US, Japan is against the mainland claiming Taiwan through aggression.

Agreed. Taiwan has an ally in Japan. Taiwan also fared better than others under the Japanese. |

Interesting! But Japan did do some good to Korea. In 1910 north and south was about to have their little war. Japan invaded to protect their interest in Korea. Only 8 years after Korea got their independents from Japan, the north and south finally had their little war.
The irony is that many Koreans hate Japanese people and blame the U.S. for their war.
Anyway thanks again everyone! I really enjoyed reading your prospectives and I am looking forward to visiting Taiwan this summer. |
