Hi, I live in Nagano, which is just up the road from Matsumoto/Shirojiri. My friend who lives in Matsumoto teachers there, and her comment was a non commital, `its all right`. There probably isn`t much there, judging by Nagano which has a pop of 360k, and is pretty dead night life wise. I.e, on a Saturday night its quite common to find yourself alone in a pub, and clubs, well, can`t say I`ve found any.

If you`re not into nightlife it should be okay. As far as what it will look like I imagine it looks the same as every other Japanese city I`ve been to, a concrete jungle, but I can guarantee it`ll be safe to live and probably cheap too. Fairly close to Tokyo too, you can do it in an easy day trip from there. Kyoto/Osaka maybe four or five hours. Plus, there are a lot of mountains about.

Chris

I think the population is in the 200,000 to 250,000 range but it is difficult to tell in Japan because it might include the whole area or just inside the official Matsumoto municipality. There was some nightlife but not tons. There were lots of Brazilians living in the area when I was there and they put on some great parties so keep an eye out for flyers in Portugese.
