Basically there are about a dozen or so stereotypical tefl teacher types which most tefl teachers can be fitted into. The bulls h i t t e r is just one of those stereotypes.

Molly, yeah, you know this guy, he worked for you. How he has lasted this long at his current job is beyond me. Can you tell me, did he provide any documents to support any of his claims?

I don't think he is the norm, but rather the abnorm., I find most TEFler's, even the sketchy ones to be out for some harmless fun, and not living a life of lies. Yeah he has some real problems, and those who know him probably have some better stories of his glorious past. When I met teachers like him, which is few and far between, I am little embarrassed that we are in the same profession. I would rather listen to 31 rant and rave about this that and the other thing than to sit through another 5 minute one sided conversation with him. (actual 31 that was a complement, truly it was! Very Happy )

We all exaggerate a little bit, but this guy is on a different planet of reality. I would have liked to say to him, "Do you really think everybody believes what you say? We know you are full of it, so just be quiet and save what little bit of self respect and dignity you have left." Of course, if you were to see the size of this man you would understand why I wouldn't dare say such a thing, he could break me scrawny butt in half!! Crying or Very sad

But I still would have liked to have met that Zoe, she sounds like a real winner!

Great. I would hate to really be in your bad books. I don`t RANT do I?

Yeah, when I look back one legged Zoe with a deformed hand, a serious drink problem and no qualifications was a real gem.

One of our head teachers was sucked in by his stories. When you hear them at first they seem almost plausible, but when they grow and change you realize he really is not on this planet. He didn't last long with us. And, yes, he is a tall guy so I would not want to get him riled.

I interviewed a woman once who was qualified but as I talked to her I realized she was way off the planet. She was being followed by the CIA and Scotland Yard and THEY were out to get her, etc etc. It was pretty weird. When we wouldn't hire her she accused me of being a police spy. I called her consulate and told them where she was so they could take care of her. I don't know if they did or not. There are strange people in the world. Makes it more colourful, but I feel sorry for them, too.

I never would have thought of calling the consulate. Was it the British Consulate and what was their tone like when you called them?

The Tall guy has some tall tales, yet he is harmless. The famous old ones who show up drunk to work, are the ones to watch out for. As far as I know none of the great drinkers of Ist have worked for E/T or any other of the new schools. I have heard that one of the great B's is now head teacher. This is a man who walked into class and fell flat on his face, passed out.

The Tall guy is just some talk. He hurts no one but himself.

Yes he is all talk, but he hurts more then just himself, he hurts the reputation of the school, not that the school has some outstanding reputation anyway. He makes everyone look bad, he uses his sex life to entertain a class, he will walk into the classroom with one button on his shirt buttoned and his tattoo's showing spreading lies about everything, all the while trying to sleep with his students and putting other people down in the process. How is that harmless to others? I do realize that everybody knows he is full of $h!t but he is just aggravating and it gets real old real fast.

Hmmm...so many to choose from.....
I once shared a flat with a guy who had a kind of shrine to his mother, complete with candles and incense, in his bedroom. He could be heard praying to it every night.
Next door to us lived a chap who was a dead ringer for Philip Larkin - well, a living version anyway - who was calm, quiet and polite, and had a beer bottle he would talk to in the dead of night. After drinking beer, however, he became a violent, raving thug.
One off the wall weird guy who magically appeared in Bakirkoy back in 95/96 was Alex. He set himself up in the best penthouse suite in the Crowne Plaza, managed to get himself a job through sheer charm, then went on to show that he was entirely, totally mad. After running away from eight jobs in as many weeks, and bringing his even madder wife over, and then indulging in beating each other to a bloody pulp on a nightly basis, he did a runner, leaving a collossal hotel bill.

It was the Australian consulate. They seemed somewhat sympathetic but they didn't promise to do anything.

Re the tall guy, I agree that though he may be personally harmless, he does damage the school and the profession.

Come on, don't you think that the army of drunks this city has is more of a problem than the talkers.
Molly, how many times have you had to find a replacement for a drunk. How many times have students come down and said the teachers breath is a joke.

No no matter how weird a teacher may be, he or she can still pull off a good job. The drunks can't.
