First one sounds a bit like Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams. |

Yes, in China, still the Carpenters (I made the mistake of telling my students that Karen carpenter was dead...some were too sad to come to class the next day)
In the US it's considered bad if the radion station plays the same song six time in the same day. Here they play the same song six times in the same hour. Last year it was "I'm a big big girll in a big big world" The term ad nauseum doesn't even come close
In China they have an ancient Chinese secret. At the door of the music shop that blast the music so lod it breaks the ear drums. Thus when you enter the store, you are tone deaf, and can not tell good music from bad music. i understand this is useful in sales. I mean, they play the music loud, put the speaker near the door, so all passerbys must cringe for 30 seconds

I once told my students that in some places in the world there were some people HATED Briteny Spears, The Backstreet Boys, et al with a passion. Also that many people measure musical talent by musical ability rather than by image. They looked at me as if I were a talking, flying mongoose.
Yes, the ancient Chinese secret gets used a lot. Same thing happens in my uni's dining hall. Sigh, how could a country that in the past actually had some okay music (I mean Qing dynasty and before) have fallen upon such melodiously hard times? Even the traditional stuff gets tiresome because 80% of all TV broadcasts are nothing but flute music, Beijing opera, etc etc. |

When I was in Venezuela it was played several times an hour. Whitney is a great singer but that was too much.
Speaking of Vonnegut, I saw him speak in Maine a few years ago.
Also--I am a newbie, but why on earth would I go straight to Newbie Lounge? The general forum is where the fun is at! |

Russians are obsessed with Queen. How often have I passed a kiosk blaring "The Show Must Go On?" It is like a cult. I met a man in Ukraine who told me he had lived in London. I asked him if he had seen any sights there, expecting to hear about museums or historical sights. He replied that he saw Freddy Mercury's grave.
Another time I was walking along the sidewalk speaking English with a friend when a stranger came up and asked where I was from. He then sang a fortissimo version of "We are the Champions" without even a trace of a Ukrainian accent.
There is a special place in hell for Chris DeBerg. You know the song. But do you remember his other hit?
"Don't pay the ferryman"
"Don't even fix a price"
"Don't pay the ferryman"
"'till he gets you to the other side"
