I am British and I work with a lot of American and Canadian teachers. I have to agree with the last post with regards to wages being the same for EU and non EU teachers. As far I know, this applies to the companies I work for. I work for one of the biggest companies in Madrid, owned by an American (who is legal by the way, married to a Spanish citizen!) and 2 years back when I started working as an EFL teacher, their policy was strictly EU teachers. About 6 months ago, I started working in a telecommunications company (via this academia) with 2 American teachers, both graduates from the same TEFL training school in Madrid. As to be expected we do compare notes and lo and behold, we all make the same hourly rates. Basically this only EU teachers policy has changed even with this very big academy as the truth of the matter is there is a lot of teaching work around and not enough qualified English teachers around - EU/non EU.

Rates? Pretty accurate, the going rate at the 3 academies I work for is between 14 -19 euros an hour. And yes, the average Spanish employee under 30 will find it a wee difficult to earn 1200 euros monthly, let alone 1600 euros a month. Maybe 900 - 1000 and they have to work 40 hours from 9-6. So I guess my life as an English teacher is not that bad after all. Again I agree with the last post, do not compare average wages in Spain with those of the UK , Germany or France. !Que va!
