Pusherman, thanks for the knowledge. Yes, I am very serious about becoming as good a teacher as I can be. Teacher development is a very important piece of the puzzle for wherever I might get my first EFL-job. What I am really hoping for is a place that places emphasis on the actual education of their students, has a solid support system for instructors-as far as both access to classroom aids and an actual teacher development program, and one that is flexible as far as "how" an instructor can teach. This simply means that I would still like to have the ability to be personallycreative in lesson-planning, and not simply act as a mothpiece for the company's way of teaching. I don't know if ET can provide this environment, or not? Perhaps molly can enlighten me. I will check into the places mentioned.

I think companies/schools need to allow individual teachers to teach how they teach. However, it is also important that there be a system that this fits into. For example, we have a weekly pacing schedule, but we don't insist that on day 1 all teachers be on a certain page. Some days are slow for teachers or students, and some days are fast. Teachers write their own lesson plans, though some are not very good at it or are just plain lazy at it. In addition, we do insist that teachers keep up with the pace, and if a particular student is struggling, we have ways to try to help him/her. We are a large school and we are trying to develop and maintain consistency, so a level 4 at one branch, for example, is the same as a level 4 at another one. It is a bit of a bumpy ride, but I think we are more and more successful. |
