Seth, you are a bad, bad man
I think you've been spending too much time with Chinasyndrome. :wink |
Thanks for the vote of confidence, Ms Molly-mei! Suppose you're going to blame your husband's outrageous behaviour on me too!
It seems that elsie is tagging you - no one wants to play with him so he's got the matches out. I've had 3 PMs from him but he doesn't take 'no reply' for an answer. Monday 19th's try was 'Hi NOYB, glad to see you're back!'
Another was 'watch out for Sunaru. He's (can't remember). We don't want to lose you.' Trawling. I'm chinasyndrome. Always have been; always will be. If I get chucked out of here I'll get chucked out as who I am, not as some multiple personalty disordered wacko. And that'll be that.
elsie, thanks but please don't PM me any more. I'm asking nicely and I shouldn't have to ask publicly. And now we fold up this episode and move on to something that is either intelligent or funny or maybe both. There's some interesting threads in here today.
Arioch's obviously got a bee in his bonnet about a few things. I'm off to see if I can help him out.
Seth? When are you coming home? Everyone likes you and would, I'm sure, love to know what your plans are if that's not too personal a question. |

I'm still undecided. I was about to begin emailing some schools but decided to put that off for another couple of weeks to see what happens around here. I told myself that if I can't get a decent job by June 15 I'll head back to China next term. However, I just read in the news that Dubya got the ball rolling on Iran and it looks like another standoff is about to begin. The Pentagon wants to destablize Iran so there's a 'popular resistance to topple the government.' Yeah right. I don't want to be in China with a lot of drama going on. I had enough drama with Iraq and SARS.
I think I'll move to Canada. Or Scotland. |

I know what you mean from reading some of the comments here, but I think the anti-Americanism is another locational and situational one. None of the Americans here got a hard time. It was hardly even a topic for discussion. Point is, perhaps the smaller cities are less world-politicized than the bigger ones. Maybe the FTs on the ground where you want to go can give you some background into local sentiments.

Good call! They need all the ESL teachers they can get! Especially the Canadians!
Keep us up to date, huh? From my experience on the forum I'd say you're the most liked person here. That's gotta be a record - no one torches (or should that be 'tortures'?) you. Good luck, whatever direction you go in.

"It is possible that the disease originated in another species and then spread to the civets, he said at a news conference this afternoon, while adding that he believed that the disease came to people from civets. While no tests have been done, it is also "theoretically possible" that household cats could become infected, as they are very similar biologically to civets, Professor Yuen added. "
It has since been reported that the civets are NOT felines. |

I am glad tess at least got some of the facts right. Civet cats are not true cats. They are more closely related to mongeese or similar animals.
It is also very unlikely that SARS crossed to humans from eating the meat of civet cats. Remember that if the meat is properly cooked that would kill any viruses. The disease likely crossed over to humans who handled the animals or cut them up in preparation for eating.
It's a good thing most of the posters here are English teachers and not biologists or medical scientists

What do you mean, cook the cats? They cook the meat? It loses all the nutrition. Or is cooking meat a Taiwan thing. I am going to stick with SARS comes from pouter space |

Civets : small carnivores that look like long-nosed cats with long slender bodies, pointy ears and short legs. THEY ARE NOT *beep*-CATS!
So, you must eat a wild aminal, hiccup, aminal, to get this disease. One Chinese teacher here had her students write "it's not good to eat wild game..." in English mind you 25 times (Qingpu).
Civets...and I thought it was a kind of specialized veterinarian. 8) |

Hmmm. I saw something that looked remarkably like a civet on Maoming Lu last Friday (and before anyone asks, this was before I'd had a drink).
Does anyone know if civet territory extends to urban Shanghai? And, more importantly, do they bite? |

Now now Predator -
You were still hung over, remember, those rings around the tail truned out to be bags under the eyes, and that furry look was the cheap imitation fox she was wearing, remember, I was with you smoking my 8th cigar of the day.
I warned you about her bite and rabies. Yup they do bite and they have rabies. Now maybe they also have SARS. |

But I want them to be cats! Besides, there is an old Confucian saying: If it looks like *beep*, if it smells like *beep*, it probably is *beep*. Well, they look like cats!

Not much into Chinese strategy are you, mate? She warned them, and that's the important thing. The fact that she warned them in a language they can't undertsand using words they never remember is neither here nor there.
