I quite liked the look of Ayvalık when I passed through there a few years back but didn't have the opportunity to stop and look around much. You're a lucky guy to have sorted out your retirement home there.

A few years ago, I went on an African safari and spent 2 weeks in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. It was a totally unique area being the only inland river delta in the world. The river branches out into channels and just ends up in the middle of the Kalahari Desert.
I was rowed in a canoe (mokoro) to the campsite - it was an unusual experience both exciting and frightening. You looked at the beauty of the scenery and all the animals but terrifying as you looked under every water lily or leaf for traces of a crocodile or hippo.
In the afternoons, the elephants paraded past the campsite on their way to the river and at night sitting around the campfire, you could hear the lions roaring.

Hmmm, favourite, unforgettable place?

Petra is definitely in the top ten, along with Baalbak, Byblos the Pantheon in Rome and the trainyard in Santa Fe

But, I'd have to say that the Chellah Necropolis (in Rabat) wins the prize for me.

Perhaps it was just the air that afternoon, calm and mystical as I shared the space with no tourists but many storks and cats. As the evening prayer calls echoed, I wrote a letter to my (soon to be) wife and absorbed the feeling of the centuries old inhabitants; from the Romans of Sale' to the Maranids to the French (and now the storks).

Hoo boy, what a nice day that was!

@Kent....I never cared much for the kimbop *or* the kimchi. However, since kimchi was served with every meal, I felt obligated to take a bite so as not to offend my company. Confused
I worked for a company called Chaemis...not sure if they are still operating now, that was back in 97/98 (during the big crash). I actually taught at many schools...kindy, elementary, jr. high, and a few bushibans, as well as some private teaching. I believe the section I was living in was called Innudong...something like that...it was close to a Denny's pizza anyway. Wink Did you ever go to the bars near the university? There were two that all us expats used to frequent, but darned if I can remember the names of them. Anyway...'tis very cool to have "met" someone else who worked in Chonju. Smile

Ayvalik and the area was great! I'm afraid I took the Chellah for granted, there were so many remarkable places in Morocco. I often hung out at the Mausoleum Mohamed V, looking out at les Oudaias and little boats going across the Bou Regreg near its mouth - great site. But then there's Chaoun, Marrakesh, Essouira, Sidi Ifni, Tata and magical little places hidden along the way.
Petra is still on my list as well, as is the Great Barrier Reef and the Galapagos.
Anyone like to visit caves?

Thanks for the votes for Petra.... I must go there for sure now.

Being hieroglyphed out in Luxor, Egypt was a grand feeling. Taking a hired boat to the island of Philae at night was also wonderful.

However, after all my travels, I've come to the conclusion that the best place to be is ANYPLACE with someone I love.

In Asia I think the best thing I have seen is the Angkor Wat complex. Spend a week hanging around having picnics and chatting with the locals.
In Europe I think drinking tea and smoking in the old part of Granada has a special charm .
