IJ,
I have asthma and to my surprize, I had more trouble with it when I lived in Canada. I have only had one attack since I have been in China. By the way asthma in Chinese is "xiao chuan" if you ever need to say it. I would suggest against moving to Xi'an though. It is more polluted than many other cities. I also would put in a vote for Shandong province.

Uh, do not go there, do not pass go, do not collect 2000 RMB.

Xi'an is one of the Four Furnaces of China in the summer and has terrific sandstorms in spring from time to time besides air pollution from factories.

Sorry Rick - although Xi'an is pretty hot is summer it is categorically not one of the 'four furnaces' in China.

Traffic is probably the biggest cause of pollution in Xi'an - though steps are being taken to alleviate this problem. Taxis are regulated to a greater extent and most bus routes have new buses that spew out less nasty fumes. The new underground train system in Xi'an will open in a few years - that should also make a big difference.

In terms of the visual environment Xi'an has perhaps gone through the most radical beautification process of any city (apart from SH and BJ). The new fountain/square development in front of Da Yan Ta (Big Goose Pagoda) cost a reputed US$1 billion (there's a separate debate about priorities ready to go there) and looks absolutely stunning.

Xi'an has also banned public smoking on Dong Da Jie - and I have never heard of any other city in China doing this, though Roger may know of others.

Hey, I'd have to weigh in with those that say Xi'an is very polluted. I've lived here for a year, through 4 seasons, and there has never been a clean one. I actually live a little outside the city, so my nostrils are pretty clean. But I often go in (just about every weekend) and after a 6 hr day down there, I come back with 'city eyes' which is a dry, foggy sensation; black stuff in my nose and maybe even a chunk of yuck in the back of my throat. (Sorry to be gross, but true info is what you need here).

Last month I was in the city for a whole week, full time. I've never coughed so much. But, to be fair, it wasn't horrible. They are putting a whole district of park space and Xi'an has more trees lining the streets than I've seen in China. Maybe the big boulevards in Bejing can compete.
Captain Yossarian is right about the traffic being the issue. It's pretty bad here, but I don't think you should count of the underground train - they've found a water table problem (too high, too close, something...) and the train idea has been scrapped.

I guess it's gonna depend on how serious your problem is. If it affects 'normal' people that have no pre-existing condition, it would be very bad for you. Maybe somewhere on the coast?

ps - there are no sandstorms here. There is an amazing amount of dirt on the ground, and it can sometimes get caught in the wind - but I've never seen anything that resembles a sandstorm.

Otherwise, Harbin might be good since at least the cold air will blow most of it out. Or Weihai in Shandong, or Qingdao are passable.

Harbin air will be full of coal smoke during the winter. Otherwise, the Dongbei is OK. Hope you like bajiu!
