Mario, this is silly. Yes, the words have different meanings which, as I quoted, are precisely the opposite of what you said. I checked 8 or 10 different dictionaries to be sure I understood the meanings correctly myseelf. All of them are as stated in my post: a mistake is a misunderstanding .....

I don't much care if you want to use your own definitions, but all the dictionaries I checked are disagreeing with you.

Am I correct in assuming it would be pointless to return to the topic of the poster not being a native English speaker, and his purpose in making the post about KC in Nanchang?

I'm willing to debate or explore the methods, and the accuracy thereof, of identifying the nationality of writers by their 'errors' (if you prefer), but I don't really want a senseless debate on trivia.

Dear BearCanada,

The OP's poor usage of English grammar does NOTHING in anyway to diminish the value nor the comments contained in his original posting. It remains a very serious warning for all those FTs even considering employment at this school in question. Such warnings are posted, I believe, for the benefit of all on these Forums and those of us in China can only find merit and value in such postings. They indeed render a valuable service. Thus, I find myself concurring with Mario.

Incidentally, I am half-tempted to point out all of the grammatical errors in your postings, particularly the improper and inconsistent usage of parallel structure, punctuation, etc., but not wishing to be a pedantic person, I shall remain from doing so.

Again, Mr. Nick, thank you for your original posting. I have saved into my list of "no-no" schools in China.

All of the best,

HunanForeignGuy

We are now getting into metalanguage, a word coined by Halliday for language that talks about language.
Lay dictionaries are hardly likely to cover this. So, Bear, how would you differentiate between the gaffe made by someone who knew the rule but didn't apply it [you and I do this on a daily basis] and someone who made a similar botch because they didn't know the rule?
They are different things and no matter how many dictionaries you refer to, they are named differently in linguistics.

Yes.

If the school is indeed a bad one, the nationality of one of the foreign teachers who was shafted is not important. Posters indicated that virtually all foreign teachers at the school have suffered bad treatment by the school administrators. Who cares if they are native English speakers or non-native English speakers? Shouldn't all foreign English teachers receive good treatment?

On the other hand, trying to insinuate that a non-native speaker of English MUST be Chinese (and thus the writer of a fraudulent posting) is simply nasty.

Finally, jumping to the conclusion that (possible) typos are inevitably linguistic mistakes is plain silly.

I might add Henry, that the insinuation [not by you] that Chinese teachers of English are unable to do the job properly is insulting and false. The majority of FTs I taught with had little idea of the workings of language, let alone how to run a classroom.

To HunanForeignGuy;

I noted your comment about the potential to "point out all of the grammatical errors in your postings, particularly the improper and inconsistent usage of parallel structure, punctuation, etc."

I am always willing to take constructive criticism and instruction from my superiors, and would be grateful if you would please point out all of my grammatical errors - including improper usage of parallel structure.

Well Mario, you seem to be my superior. Maybe you could take his place. I would be grateful if you would be kind enough to point out my English mistakes and/or errors.

I am definately inferior to you. But, your mistake is in trying to tell everyone here how superior you are.

EF has a checkered reputation throughout China.

Kids Castle usually has a good reputation.

In Nanchang EF has an excellent reputation and Kid's Castle is rather bad.

Go figure. I am in Nanchang and we FTs do chat with each other.

ok firstly...

I have absolutely no idea what you people are talking about.

The intention behind mr_nick's post (yes his real name is Nick) is to merely warn others about how bad this school is. NO HE IS NOT CHINESE, HE'S CANADIAN!!!
The way he writes may or may not be correct but really, who cares?

Are you all forgetting that this is the internet where things such as "LOL"
and "sth" are commonly used and understood???? why would you point out somebody's grammatical mistakes for making such a helpful post?

A "thank you" might be a much more appropriate response rather than blasting him about his 'internet typing'.

And dear Bear Canada, please highlight every single grammatical mistake i have made in this post. I really do NOT care about such remarks. Such remarks will simply go on my 'did you say something?' list.

Knows the OP from the bar, where I'm sure he calls himself Mr. Nick. Sure, English speakers love to use Mr. plus our first names. Added together, it makes me awfully suspicious.

And the posting dates for both of which are May 20th. A one year anniversary of the first post perhaps. I too am suspicious that these posts may have been made by one person.
