I've got one month off entirely, during which I'm trying to live the kind of life that all my mainland friends think I have. Then its back into classes so I can chip away at the bloody degree. I'm also job hunting but doubt I'll find anything. The job market here in paradise is positively anemic. |

I'm going to luxuriate (not a word, but an experience) in Vancouver, BC - in a WESTERN country and do all the WESTERN things I can't do here in the Gulf: walk, go to yoga classes, go swimming, read books in the library, see movies, - all kinds and not just Hollywood blockbusters, etc.
Then to the States to see friends. Being USA American, I can only be in the USA for 30 days or else I get taxed on my income.
Last summer I taught in the UK. A BIG MISTAKE. Rather than teach young kids, I got teenagers and French teenagers are horried. Plus the July weather in Oxfordshire was horrendus. I usually wore my long underwear because of the chill. It's one thing to hear about the bad weather in the UK, and another thing to live through a horrible July, in a small, remote British rural town.
A two-month paid holiday has often been difficult - two months to spend money. I've usually returned early because I ran out of money. I just wish I didn't NEED to the experience of being free in the West to get through next year..... or else I'd save money and go someplace cheaper. |

Dear MindTraveller,
Just a comment - possibly a correction, but given the obscurity of the tax laws, I don't want to say for sure - about this:
" Being USA American, I can only be in the USA for 30 days or else I get taxed on my income. "
I think - and hope, seeing as I've been in the USA for more than 30 days on my vacations - that you may be wrong about that. If you " pass the " Bona Fide Residency Test " ( " Were you a bona fide resident of a foreign country or countries for period that includes an entire tax year? " - source: 2555-EZ form ), then you can stay for more than 30 days. The only consequence is that, on Part IV of the form ( Figure Your Foreign Earned Income Exclusion ), you will enter, say, 316 days ( rather than 335 days ) on the line that asks for the number of days in your qualifying period that fall within the tax year. This means you won't get the full $80,000 exclusion, but, for example, with 316 days, your exclusion would be $69,040, instead. So, unless you're making a heck of a lot more than I am, that shouldn't be a problem.
Regards,
John |

Dear MindTraveller,
" I'll try it next summer ".
Well, if I'm wrong, maybe we'll get adjoining cells.

Yeah, I thought about it but what if I got caught and deported? Then where would I be? Not in Japan, that's where! (or where not, if you see what I mean). |
