Hey, my 2 cents is, I came in on a 1-way and had no problem whatsoever.
Also, responding to eva, any idea how to check current conditions for Paso Libertadores? I have a ticket for this Friday, gotta renew the ol' visa again. I just posted about that, but thought I'd be redundant and ask here since it was mentioned. Thanks!

thanks for being so nice, everyone. i am still a bit concerned about the diploma thing. i can't seem to understand why there are different opinions about the subject. the question is, should i get my diploma, received from a certified university, notorized or something like that in order to get my working papers once i get them? i know that this seems a little before its time but still, it takes 8 weeks to get it done so i would rather start doing something about it if it is necessary. any suggestions? also, is it absolutely impossible to get a job from abroad, i know that everyone seems to be against it but it's kind of scary to just come and sink or swim, although, thinking about it in retrospect, that's exactly what i did when i came here to puebla. and to the person who was here for a summer, puebla is nice for a short period of time, but then it just gets tiring. starting with having monthly water shortages to the drivers always trying to run you over ect. but i do like it, and most of all, i am going to miss my job since i don't think i will get to teach at the university level once i am in santiago. but i guess you can't have it all.

Lauren--

My school helped me contact and look at apartments. That was one of the reasons I wanted to have a job lined up beforehand--I wanted help with things like housing, visas, etc. It took me just under a week to find and move into my apartment. I ended up getting really lucky--the office women all kinda flocked to me and helped me out (maybe it's a frail woman thing? I don't think I'm that frail!!), and one of them had a friend who had a spare room. The places that I looked at were all about 100,000 per month. You can find places for much less, but they might not be in the best neighborhoods. I'm in Providencia, and it's awesome. If you need any help when you get here, just PM me.

I'll be out of Santiago for about a month--my school is opening up a new branch down in Concepcion--but if there's a get-together around mid-August later, I'll be back by then.

PostPosted: Fri Jul 08, 2005 8:39 pm    Post subject: bridge-linguatec and reputable schools Reply with quote

hello again
this is a question for koolkat
i just read your post where you say that you're doing the bridge-linguatec program, which program were you referring to? because i was looking for a tefl online and contacted them but then was unsure if it was worth it, what do you think?
i will be going to santiago on the 2nd of september, so we will all be around there at the same time, any suggestions on schools that are known for giving visas to their employees?
there are so many schools and most people say to just wait until i get there but i don't want to get to santiago and the next day realize that i don't know what to do next and look up in the yellow pages. that would really suck. so if any of you know of the better schools, with reputations for giving visas and reasonable hours, please write
thanks

This is mostly for koshechka, but for anyone else who (like me) was/is worried about finding a job in Santiago -don't be. My wonderful fianceas well as ALL of my Chilean friends think Iam crazy to worry about it ahead of time, because jobs are plentiful. I don't know that first hand, but I sure will in 5 more weeks!

I hope to bump into you all at the English bookstore on Los Leones sometime... I think the english/spanish discussion groups meet at 8 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays.

i agree with you, tio-oso, i know that we are overacting, but it's not like there is anything else to do. i am only working two hours a day, and the rest of the time i have for overacting and overworrying. there are probably a lot of jobs out there, but it's also very probable that not all are on the same level as far as what they offer. and yeah, once i get there it would be nice to meet up with some of the people from this forum, it would probably be a bit strange but nice anyway.
ciao

I just thought everyone could use some words of encouragement:

You WILL find a job!!!

Yes, it will take a bit of legwork and pavement-pounding in the beginning, but basically, a polite, well-spoken, hard-working native English speaker should not fear total unemployment in Chile, even if you don't have all the ideal certificates and qualifications. Even if you have to take a job at a so-so institute at first, look at it as a resume-builder, step on the road to working at a great place. And dont' forget there's always private students and translations to fall back on!

Best of luck to you all!!! Smile
