hey TP

What's is the bid deal with picture request... even TBI, British Council, Berlizt....the all want the same thing....a good native speaker ...white skin... too bad for the others

This is the selling point of all the language schools. Probably a French guy can be hire, keep away from the parents and they are all happy because they see white skin in the classroom. It's not nice to say buy..THIS IS REALITY

In your case you are looking for a good school, how can you judge a school just by the way the do their recruitment. Language schools, they are looking for same thing....what will make the difference between the backpacker school and the serious one.... the package the school offers. If the offer is good....they will get plenty of GOOD application....you can't say they want only white skin. The school will be able to choose the right candidate.....the opposite of school as EF... teacher choose in which one he will work....

Discrimination.....What about people from Ireland, South Africa...not consider as Native speaker.....

I know some National Plus schools, who hired teachers from Philippine and India, very good english teacher, a lot better than the majority of EF teachers...but you can imagine the number of complaints from parents because the are not white...i have a friend coming from the US, but is skin is a bit dark...the school got complaints because of this

No hard feelings....but remember, schools are nall looking for the same thing.

Indeed, this I do understand. My personal opinion is that it is unfortunate that this is the case, but I can't change the world. My point is that it has got to the point now that schools are so desperate to recruit a 'white face' that they will take anyone - the first 'white face' that walks in the door. Because of this, decent teachers are being marginalized & considered as 'losers who can't get a job back home'.

I have experienced this in both Indonesia & China: It is actually much worse here in China where people can simply walk into a school & get hired without any exp. or qualifications. This saturates the market with backpacker teachers - we then fall in to this category.

My apologies for using your school as an example - this is not meant as a personal attack against you (though it may seem so).

I once applied for a job in Malaysia sending my photo as an attachment to my CV - the reply made it quite clear that the person found it insulting that I felt the need to send a picture without being requested to send one. The 'image' in this case was not the schools priority.

Again, pls accept my apologies that I have singled you out here.

It's ok TP

I can tell you that the school's owner is quite stress at the moment because i still have 3 positions available.

I got al ot of emails, interviews, but i don't want to hire the first 'white face' that walks in the door.

You can't imagine ( i think you can) what kind of people came for an interview. I'm sure, all of them will find a job in Jakarta, but not in our school.

We want to be in the driver position, we will choose the teacher who will work with us. Let me tell you....it's very difficult to find the right one.

Anyway good luck..

Langauge Companies market a number of things.
their curriculem, their experience, their prices AND THEIR FOREIGNERS.
If you look good, it may help to seal a deal.
If you are female and young, mothers will want you to entertain their little gnomes.
If you are ok looking and male, you will get the teenage girls, because they will say you are handsome and you will get brownie points in the feedback surveys.
If you are mature, you will be marketed to adults, both for flirtacious reasons with the ladies and for the contact with a white guy experience from the dudes attending.

Also your CV is marketed.

it sucks.

Indonesian business sucks.

Its disgusting that "education" companies market staff and not their reputation or abilities.

whoa... its almost 5.00..time for the Simpsons!
Smithers.... release the hounds!!!

Interesting dialouge......it seems that the sum that we can all agree on is....that reality is far cry from our idea of what is fair.

TP mentioned his experience with a Malaysian school...not wanting to have his photo. The point that I was trying to make in an earlier post on this thread....and was unable to articulate is that racism exist in the world....that is the sad fact. In Asia it works to your advantage to be white.....in other parts of the world (my personal experience being in the USA) is that being white and especially a white male is the kiss of death when it comes to applying for a job. I shuttered when I was still Stateside and found out why the schools all wanted a photo.

As for Bulekampung....you are to be commended for not just hiring the first bule fae through the door. This is where the argument can be made that it is helpful to see a recent photo of the applicant, regardless of race, to make sure that they fit your school's ideal candidate. Perhaps your school, unlike most Ef's I know, do not want to hire the dreadlock, eyebrow piercing, nose stud, tongue ring, tatooed crew crowd. Well, what can I say. Hooray for your school's professionalism. It is in such short supply around here. Also, the Ef contract is a total joke...no stamps (materai-bahsa Indonesia if you dare) so when the boys from immigrasi came round...good lluck...you'll need it.

Also excellent points regarding color of skin or darkness of skin tone (In the PC US..this is a topic I would not even dream could be discussed) really don't correlate to nationality. I know many Americans with purely generic names, but with Italian, Spanish, Mexican, Cuban ,,,the list goes on...roots. They have darker skin than us pasty white people...but I the same in native tongue, nationality and all that. Regarding, the Irish and South Africans...totally agree.....it is a shame....a good example of just silly things can be.

Finally to Chester. Fantastic assessment of the reality of marketing and teaching in Indonesia. Question...how hard did you laugh..the first time that you were at Heros or Carrefour and saw face whitening creme. ha ha
so when the boys
