I noticed that they are hiring again for this August. What is up with that? Can't they hire people in advance or was there an unexpected exodus?

Apparently they just didn't get as many people as they needed - for all the reasons mentioned earlier in this thread. Still a lot of jobs going if you have the qualifications.

I wonder if they are filling (trying to fill) MLI openings through usual HCT Central Casting...

That gives the interviewee another question mark as to getting into the better branches.

VS, word is some MLI people who got refused LOI/LOAs from CERT are getting offers from HCT. This would seem like the opposite of your theory. Looks like maybe one hand doesn't know what the other is doing or they don't look out for each other Wink This is getting weirder and weirder ... Why not spare people the anxiety of getting rejected only to be picked up by what seems to be the same HR department ?! Evil or Very Mad

Maybe I'm naive, or just lucky but I honestly don't hear many major complaints where I work. I know there are problems in some colleges, but if it's so bad why not leave? Life's too short.

Yes, this seems to be the general view of the normal HCT teacher in the normal HCT college - and I have no dispute with that. Most HCT colleges are fine, most HCT teachers, supervisors etc. are fine and the HCT package is a very good one.

However, if you're in one of the (very few) bad colleges, well it can be a different -even tragic - story. A lot of very decent, very competent people from these colleges (and, let's be frank, we all know I'm referring to Sharjah Men's, Sharjah Women's & Ras-al-Khaimah here) have been screwed by certain supervisors/managers over the past few years.

The situation at Sharjah was thoroughly documented here on at least three different threads. All the threads were deleted, ostensibly because names were named, and more than one of the posters was banned from Dave's- a very heavy-handed approach as the threads could easily have been moderated without being totally deleted. Which would have saved me from periodically repeating the same old stuff on here. But I'm not going to go away.

And, hey, Uncle Billy still features a lot in the MLI postings but no one's deleting them!!

Perhaps certain people threatened to sue the Eslcafe for libel - I don't know. But libel, in legal terms, is a defamatory statement about someone that "misrepresents" the truth. There was no misrepresentation in the three deleted threads. There was no case that would have stood up in a court of law.

As to why people don't leave - well some did because they had no choice!! Others are quite happy at these bad colleges - they "fit the profile" - at least for the moment - and most of them are good, professional people. Others have family responsibilites etc.. and it's difficult to uproot. But as to how many of them feel professionally satisifed and secure in their jobs, well that's another story.

Since none of them post here - but most of them do read these threads - it's difficult to gauge the real level of feeling.

I've heard/read mostly good things about RAK, especially recently.

Could you share more specific details as to why HCT RAK isn't so good in your opinion?

Let's not be too hard on the people who provide this forum FREE of charge. I understand your feelings, but active moderation takes a lot of work and leads to a lot of headaches.

At least one rather libelous MLI post was deleted.

Court of law? Have you ever seen this message?

It wouldn't take much.

Well, for one thing, I have friends teaching both in RAK and in Sharjah, and they would disagree with your comments. They have happily been there for years, enjoy their teaching, get along fine with management (using the tried and true avoidance whenever one can system that worked fine for me too. Cool ). They have no intention of leaving any time soon.

There are always going to be some people that are not happy with the job or have a run-in with fellow teachers or supervisors. Usually there is blame to spread evenly among all of them. I was not surprised when those threads were pulled as why should unpaid moderators spend hours editing long essays obviously written when someone was extremely upset. I suspect that most of the MLI threads have survived with minimal editing because of its rather unique situation of institutional meltdown and general chaos. Although Uncle Billy has had a few threads deleted too as I recall. Laughing

But, it's Dave's board and he sets the rules. I'm happy with that as even if you don't love everything about this place, it sure provides a lot of free information to a lot of teachers.

Kurious -

I guess I'm out of date. There were problems at RAK one to two years back, but that seems to have changed now.

I apologise for that.

As for Sharjah - I don't know. Maybe it's all sweetness and light now and maybe they've closed the departure lounge. Things do change.

But I know that a couple of people are still there whom I regard as being the scum-of-the earth.

Well-travelled

Through the years I have encountered a lot of 'scum' and a great deal of it in this field. I suspect that the expatriate life appeals to many people who are running away... from life... from themselves...

I've met and worked for and with some that were downright scary!! Life is rarely dull in the Gulf and requires a thick skin and a good sense of humor to last long term. But, one has to learn to choose one's battles carefully... a lesson that took me many many years to learn. Confused

I don't think there is 'sweetness and light' anywhere!! ... at least not in this field...
