There's also a Japanese Christian group. They call themselves something like Nihon Kirisuto Kyokai. I'd think that one would be popular, and I remember the Catholic priest who performed my wedding (an American who had been in Japan for fifty years) saying he respected that group.
There wasn't a shortage of Japanese Catholics at any of the Japanese churches I visited, and I remember my friend's orthodox masses being filled with devout Japanese. I don't know much about the protestant scene. |

| I live near a Mormon church which is sometimes a little uncomfortable because they are out everyday trying to recruit people. I tend to get ignored because I'm a foreigner and I think they're trying to encourage Japanese only to join their congregation. More power to them I say. Jehovah's Witnesses on the other handle are a nuisance. I was once stopped on my bike going to work by a Japanese convert who insisted I give him my address so he could send me some 'literature'. The whole experience was intrusive. He finally gave up when I told him I was a happily (not entirely true) confirmed Catholic. |
