If someone asked me that question right now I would point out this recent event at an Indiana funeral.
To the dozens gathered to pay their last respects Friday, Adam Harding was hailed as the best America can offer.
He died July 25, when his convoy encountered a roadside bomb.
And across the street from the solemn service, a message of horror and hate unfolded as mourners gathered.
"If God loves this country, can he not curse this country?" shouted Jonathan Phelps, spokesman for the Westboro Baptist Church group, consisting Friday of about 10 picketers.
The group's Web site hails the London bombings and states that the group wishes that the explosions could have been worse. They specialize in crashing the funerals of American soldiers.
"God is their terrorist," Phelps said. "They've turned the country over to the f@gs. They're coming home in body bags."
The group contends that dead soldiers are God's revenge for America's tolerance of homosexuality. |

Ah, the joys of freedom of speech... rather a two-edged sword...

I have noticed that in an earlier posting I wrote the above. I meant to say "what I and a few others affectionately call Lala Land."
Actually, I can unhesitatingly say that proportionally, there are far fewer Lalas, or even Looh-Lahs...in KSA than in many western countries, judging by some of the recent postings to this thread and the goings-on that they report. |

It is a so-called church in Topeka, Kansas. The "congregation" consists mainly of family members of the leader, the "Reverend" Fred Phelps. Their notorious activities mainly include picketing at funerals, rallies, parades and other events.
Their website (which is not for the faint-of-heart) is www.godhatesfags.com. Yes, this is actually their primary website. At the moment, the main headline is "God Bless Hurricane Katrina." Why? Find out for yourself -- if you dare! The hurricane explanation is disgusting and not for polite company. |

God is no longer building the American house, or keeping the American city. |
[From the WBC site].
I completely agree: since Frank Lloyd Wright and Mayor Giuliani left the scene, American architecture and urban politics just haven't been the same at all.
What's more, the US military now appears to have a serious smoking problem. What IS the world coming to at all? And I would have thought, after the dreadful hurricane in the southern US, that cigarette butts floating around would be the least of anyone's problems?
I had better elaborate for our transatlantic brethren: in the British Isles, cigarettes are very commonly referred to as "fags".
As for Sweden, well I never knew it could be that interesting! OK, good cars, beautiful blondes and one or two great pop bands, but I thought that that was about it.
All bad-taste jokes aside, however, I have taken a look at the WBC site, and got bored with its fundamentalist rantings after about 10 seconds. The amazing thing is, there are people out there who take this hateful, vitriolic crap seriously. I just hope that there aren't too many. |

I see that in my previous posting, I was beeped! Well, as my intended use of the word was harmless, I will try to elaborate by saying that ciggies in Britain and Ireland are very often referred to as ---- (the word SGAF n reverse).
Hope this clarifies!! |

Have you ever asked an American. "Excuse me have you got a f.ag?" The looks you get sometimes are most amusing. (Having never been to redneck coountry I am still alive) |

There's a story in Ireland about two Irish guys who went into a bar in NY in the late 80s.
In Ireland, we have a word "Craic" (pronounced crack) which generally means fun, repartee, a bit of "social action".
Anyway these two guys, straight off a plane from Shannon, walked into a NY bar on a Saturday night and innocently called out "Any craic going, around here?" and promptly got themselves arrested. Dunno if it's true, or an urban legend.
I actually walked into a shop in Australia in the mid-eighties, and when asked if I was OK, by the assistant, I said "oh, yes thanks, just came in for a root around", blissfully unaware that in Oz, to 'root' has an altogether different...and very sexual...meaning to "search", which is what it means in Ireland. The looks I got changed rapidly from shock and horror to uncontrollable mirth, and I'm sure those girls are still giggling. |

So the moral is don't root around for a fa.g and craic whilst in the company of our American friends. |

Always good advice dmb...

I suspect that the arrest part of that story is urban legend, as asking is not the crime.
I never got used to fellow teachers walking out of class and declaring 'I need a f@g!!' My response was to offer to check and see if X was in his office.
All rather similar to the response of our students when their English text discusses zip codes or zebras.

Does this mean, I wonder, that if an American-Australian looking for some narcotic substances and maybe hoping to get laid, walked into an Irish gay club, he would find himself being offered lots of cigarettes and some potatoes, while listening to a load of stupid jokes? |

There are discussions about this Surely your zip should remain up at all times in public. Actually an (off topic) question. Ever walked into class and realised/realized that your zip/zipper/fly was undone. |
